Hello, looking to make a used or maybe new purchase of a open cab subcompact tractor, it will be used for mowing a hilly area with belly mower and snow removal, used once a year for wood making, grading reconditioning small driveway on hill.

Kind of interested in the bobcat 1021, due to its small size, Mahindra, ls/ new holland or Kubota sub compacts. Seems all subcompacts are hydrostatic drive these days which I'm not much of a fan of currently anyway. Mind you it's only about three hilly acres up there it will be used on. Currently use a old JD 212 with extra weight and bar tires for mowing and and a 4 wheeler with tire chains, weight box, using either plow, or self contained snow blower for snow removal up there, somewhat easily detachable Loader and belly mower are what I'm looking at. Seems like used subcompacts I've found have one or the other but not both/ deck and small loader.

Somewhat apprehensive buying used envisioning some used subcompacts were initially operated like a d9 lol.

initial new tractor quotes I've currently received were all about the same, I've looked at older threads and posts Not interested in considering or looking at zero turns for up there.

Thanks for insight, Jeff.
I have a Kioti CS2022 with loader and belly mower and third function. The loader has skid steer attach. I bought it in October of 2023. It has right at 90 hours on it. The local dealer did the 50 hour service. It has done everything I have asked it to do. I am selling it because of health reasons. I am in North East Texas. I am asking $15,00.00 cash money for it. The price is firm.
Course, it is a long ways from MI. to TX.
I have been on a Kubota BX2200 with belly mower since 2010. It did not have a FEL. I moved on to get skid steer attach FEL.

Kubota BX’s and JD 1 series are very common used and are solid tractors.
They also have pretty easily attached/detached loaders and mowers. I run a B series--a bit more tractor--and can swap out either item in a matter of a few minutes. I had the loader on and off three times in four days last week without breaking a sweat.

I'm a big fan of Massey Ferguson compacts and sub compacts. I have a GC2300 and 1825E and both have been great tractors. I don't mow with them though. I can say that a compact tractor will ride much better and is a lot more stable than the sub compacts.

What is with you people mowing sidehills? Worst place for a Bobcat. Sounds like you should stick with what you have.

I have a five acre residential lot . I bought a JD 990 and an attachment JD Backhoe for Landscaping about ten years ago . For the Maintenance of the lawn we used a 60" Swisher Zero Turn , the lot is reasonably flat and it did a good job . A year a go , the house weeping tile drain was plugged with tree roots so I dug a 200 foot trench six foot deep , in the fall and winter , the open trench filled in . We bought a used Kubota B23S and I cleared the trench six feet deep with the Kubota . The JD Backhoe is a PIA to attach to the 990 tractor ! The B23S preformed very well being that much more manoeuvrable . The belly 60" mower does a better job and turns quicker than the Old Swisher and has a Grass Catcher avaliable also . The Loader is not as fast as the JD 430 Six foot bucket to clear snow but the hydrostatic drive is much better than the Manual Gearbox of the JD ( your legs will appreciate this feature after a long duration !!!! ) . The Kubota is not the Best in very Category but it is the 'Swiss Army Knife' of equipment ! Vote for the B23S , ease of attaching Loader and Backhoe with a Mechanical Finger is a Biggie in my assessment .

Hydrostatic drive increases productivity by letting you speed up or slow down while mowing depending on how thick the grass is. When you use a gear drive, you tend to use whatever gear will get you through the thickest stuff, reducing your possible speed through the easy stuff. It is also safter in the woods if you encounter hidden obstacles or run into branches or pop-up saplings that you have mowed down. I would be dead today if I had used a gear tractor in the woods; a sapling popped up and started to impale me in the chest, but I stopped, and just got a bruise. I would never have reached the clutch in time on a gear drive tractor. Today I have a Mahindra 5035 HST, which they call a compact, but at over 10,000 lb operating weight, I am not so sure it should be called a compact.

I've not had much luck with those "easy on easy off" belly mowers. It's been my experience they are anything but. Seems to be especially true unless you have a hard flat & level surface. Gets to be a pain taking off the mower frequently to do other jobs. I switched to 3pt finish mowers years ago. The cut isn't quite as good, but I find they are much easier to put on and take off.

Removing the FEL frame can also be an issue. To save time, I use an SSQA bucket and just take it off when I mow.

Lots of different opinions on this, so YMMV.

Hi, jumping in late here. I read a lot of the posts but not all, so apologize if this is a repeat. I have a New Holland 25S. FEL, BH and belly mower. It has good lift capacity vs some of the other brands. No implements yet as still have working smaller tractors. It has been good to me so far, not many hours. But what sold me (besides having a Ford 1989 diesel 16HP LGT) that still works) was the easy of operations of the FEL joystick, real smooth and a nice wide foot platform which included separate fwd and rvs pedals. JD was too expensive for me. I tried Kioti (I think similar manufacturer of Bobcat) and Massey. Confidence in dealers is important too. So try out all that you are considering. This is the tractor I should have bought 40 years ago but could not afford. I also have an Ingersoll 448 and is a good workhorse machine I use now for rototilling and plowing snow. There are larger versions out there and many parts places for these old machines so that may be worth looking into. It is fun looking. Good luck.

Not “opinions”, as much as differences in brand. What brand are you running, that getting mowers and FEL off and on is any more difficult than advertised?
