Is there a way to spray for these things or what. They are driving me nuts. I cant mow the lawn, I cant walk from house to barn, kids cant swim in pool. The hotter it gets the worse they get. How do I get these under control???

Deer flies are sight flies...they zero in on size and movement. Sight traps help a lot, but other than that these are hard to spray for since they land on trees/grass/somewhere and wait until they see movement of a certain size. They're usually not within the area until people or dogs or horses, etc show up.
I loathe those things...so annoying.

I've been using these hat patches for a few years. They don't eliminate all of those little demons but they do make a significant difference. On a good day can catch 10-20 just walking the dogs for an hour. The only bad part is you have to be wearing a hat. Don't know why they are attracted to the patch. Maybe it's the color, location or both? :confused3:

Marketed as bird repellent, it comes in a tube is real sticky or tacky. Rural King carries it. I have trouble with deer flies also and have made a few traps with Tanglefoot and a blue Solo cup. Attatched to the mirror of my pick-up and drove up and down my lane. Picture 011.jpg

You should look into putting up Purple Martin houses to start a colony. They love deer flies and other insects.

I also use the sticky patches on the back of a hat that they sell on eBay. To just keep them away from you, I wear a 'hair flar' hat which has fake hair on top of a sun visor. Spray nuclear bug killer on it and they will stay away.

You can also use packaging tape cut to a certain shape. You will have to experiment to find the best size, because the fly seems to like a certain pattern. They follow the mirrors on my car very closely so that aspect ratio is the one I use. (length to width ratio). I use the brown papckaging tape available from Staples (or probably WalMart.

Same boat here.

Pretty sad to recently discover that the new parcel of land we bought this winter is a haven for deer flies once the weather gets into summer mode. I had to stop working on my land clearing projects and taking hikes out on the land because a swarm of dozens of deer flies would try to land on and bite my head, neck, arms, etc. It was brutal.

Then I hit the interwebz and found the bright blue + tanglefoot idea. It is amazing how well it works! It's definitely a little annoying to wear a ball cap with a blue solo cup tied to the top, but it keeps me at near-zero biting levels and catches 40+ flies every time I head out there. It makes it possible to enjoy the outdoors and get some work done, and that is just terrific.

I saw that many people say the flies are only attracted to motion, but it's not so simple. The heat plus CO2 emissions from a large mammal is clearly driving their attraction to me. A blue solo cup dangling and swaying in the breeze catches no flies at all, which sucks. For example, when I drive around on a tractor, you can see the flies come check out the heat of the machine, and any moving parts, but they aren't stupid and don't linger long. Within seconds they detect my presence and come after me.

One thing I have found that is not related to catching them, but has helped me if I do get bit (I get a bad reaction, especially to Yellow Flies), is to rub Dawn Dish Soap and Hydrocortizone on a bite as soon as I notice it. It seems to dilute or lessen whatever causes the bite to swell. I have even put the Dawn on like it is a sunscreen product at times.

As far as making traps, we have tried painting Clorox bottles black, sparying on sticky stuff, and hanging them is selected areas, It seems to help to some degree.
