Had my new/used 2001 tc 40 hydro show up today. I cant get it into 2wd from 4wd. lever seems stuck? Since there is no clutch, Im suspecting that little rod end under my left heel might be a clutch for pto engagement? Dealer gave me a gear tractor manual so Im kinda in the dark. help finding a manual would be great too. thanks in advance. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

If you have a loader, just use the bucket to lift the front wheels off the ground and it should shift out of 4wd just fine. Otherwise, put the tractor on level ground and kinda rock it back and forth with the hydro pedals. If that doesn't work, you might have to jack the front end up off the ground. These tractors are notorious for being tough to shift in and out of 4wd.

The little pedal on the left under your heel is the differential lock which locks both rear tires so they both turn together.

Can't your dealer find a manual on a new tractor and copy it? It's absolutely necessary to have the correct manual. Surely your dealer could order a replacement too. Your maintenance lube points and periodicity are different on your hydro. If you can't get the dealer to cooperate, I'll make a copy of my lube chart, but I'll have to do that later this week. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Thanks, Jinman. ...makes sense.
Back to the pto issue. So I just lever it into gear? no cltuching the pto? and thanks for the offer on the manual but dont go to all that trouble. Im sure I can find something on the net or else Ill just embarass the dealer into finding one.

First, I think you do have a clutch...unless the 40 is very different than the 24. Its the rubber pedal on the left where you foot would normally be.
THe brakes would be on the other side.

While I dont have problems getting going between 2/4wd I do sometimes have problems getting into low range. Sometimes picking the loader/attachment up is enough. Others I have to move a bit in high range then itll go into low. A small % of the time I have to move the machine w/ my loader bucket to get it to go. Now that Im getting some hours on the machine though its not so tough as it was when new.

If you can't get your 24 to slide easily into a range. Leave it in Neutral, let the clutch out, and then just bump your hyrdo pedal. Push clutch back in and it then should slid right into gear. That is how I always do mine. No other way if it won't go into either range (which I've had happen) and the loader is off.

I HIGHLY recommend engaging and disengaging the PTO at idle speeds, especially on those implements that have a lot of mass (chipper, brushhog, etc.) These tractors have a PTO brake/clutch that can wear prematurely if "shocked" in and out of engagement at high RPM.

But, yes, the "no-clutch" thing is VERY cool: I don't even miss it. Especially, compared to most hydrostatic tractors since the brakes and HST pedal are on separate sides of the floor.

they are.. The class III boomers with HST transmission have no clutch pedal. Brakes are on the left where the class I and II have the clutch. If I knew all of this before I got my II, I might have sprung for a 35D...

The TC40D does not have a clutch. All the Class III Hydrostatic tractors don't have a clutch. You just have two brake pedals on the left and two hydro pedals on the right. Life is so simple. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As far as the PTO goes. When you engage the the PTO on your tractor, you actually open a hydraulic valve that sends pressure inside your transmission to a PTO brake/clutch which uses hydraulic pressure to engage the PTO. When there is no pressure, the brake engages and stops PTO rotation. That's why you can't turn your PTO by hand when hooking up a rotary cutter or similar PTO-driven implement.

When you have and implement attached and start to engage your PTO, don't just push the handle up to engage, because you will probably pop a shearpin if you do that. That TC40 has "tons" of torque. First, put your engine at idle or below 1000 rpm. Next, slowly move the PTO lever toward engage until you just see the PTO shaft start to turn. Go a little further with the lever and let the PTO come up to speed, then fully engage the PTO. Now bring the tractor's rpm up to PTO speed and look for the green 540 light on the right side of your instrument panel. If you go too fast, the 600 rpm light will come on to tell you to slow the engine. About 2,600 rpm will give you exactly 540 rpm.

When you want to disengage the PTO, first bring the engine back to idle so the PTO speed slow and then disengage the PTO lever. If you disengage the PTO at full speed, it puts a lot of stress on your PTO brake which will stop the implement in about 3-5 seconds. Some guys with 6' or 7' rotary cutters have actually damaged their brakes this way.

These are things you won't really find in the Owner's Manual, and I'm sure other folks will have a lot of good tips for you too.

Enjoy! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Mark, I didn't see your post before I made mine. Looks like we are duplicating each others comments again. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
