DannyD, THose are the meanest varmits alive ,Evil looking and scary They are white faced hornets! Ouch! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif I had a nest in my back yard when we first moved in, I waited till night fall because they won't leave the nest after dark and then I made a sneak attack... Or you can wait till your neighbor comes home and let him deal with them /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif ...Or you can wait till winter and knock down the nest then... Sneak attack propane torch ,mine were at ground level, but you could use a big garbage bag then wrap it around the nest after dark when they stay in the nest tie it off break it loose from the tree and dispose of properly ...Or you could let your neighbor deal with them /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ortho makes a wasp and hornet killer. I'd get a can of that, wait unitil night and then spray the nest. Bye bye hornets.

Glad to hear the bites were not too bad. Quite often they get you around the eyes.

To get rid of the nest isn't hard if you know where it is. Take a long pole and hit the nest several times and then run. Destroying the nest should get rid of them.

Somebody has a commercial on TV with two guys after a bees nest- one up the tree trying to cut it down and one on the ground waiting to catch it in a trash can and put the lid on it.

Looks like a good plan.... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

The guy on the ladder slips, grabs the nest, falls onto the garbage can and smashes it flat. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Flat garbage can, nest in hand, and both fellows being swarmed by bees. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Can't remember the product, but I laugh every time I think about it. Your 'garbage bag' comment reminded me of this. It's great IF it works (wouldn't want to get a piece of the branch to puncture or tear the bag) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Be careful...

About ten years ago I clambered up a ladder armed with a big can of wasp killer, intending to blast a large nest with the stuff.
When I got to the top, the bees started coming out, I raised the can and guess what....the nozzle was defective, and it would not spray more than a few inches.... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Went back down my ladder fast enough to set my all time record for that event, and for some reason, I was still holding the useless can when I got back on the ground. From that day on, I always checked to be sure a can would spray properly before I climbed the ladder.

JC, like you, I have no idea what product was being advertised, but I just happened to see that commercial a couple of nights ago and I think my wife, in another room, wondered what I was laughing about. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Darren go that right. That stuff is real good and if it is the brand I am thinking of, will spray a pretty good distance. Pretty sure it would hit a nest 12' off the ground without problem.

This stuff is pretty amazing...drops them dead in their tracks...fall to the ground instantly. That is my experience anyway. Best time for a large nest is certainly after dark...Might not hurt to have two people spraying if it is a large nest... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

While I've shotgunned a few nests in the past.. I've found a quieter way now.

Go to your garden and farm stores.. and generally you can find a can of spray that is designed to get at wasps under your eves.. etc.

It usually has a big bowerhead looking spray nozzle.. and puts out quite a bit of fluid. Last time I used one.. wasps died asthey came into contact with the mist when they left the hive.. Literally forming a small pile of dead wasps under the hive. Residue kills the remaining and returning wasps.
