Looking for suggestions about a 10-15hp size engine with vertical shaft, that can run at a high angel. Is there generally any issue with running a vertical shaft engine at a 45 degree angle or perhaps even steeper?

Look for a pressure lubed engine, they can handle angles better than a splash lubricated one. What is it going on?

Even on a pressure-lubed engine, the location of the oil pickup may make it work one direction and not the other.

Some of the slope mowers out of europe have the engine mounted in a gimbal so it will swing L-R and always stay vertical while in operation. It could be a tricky situation if trying to do belt or direct drive though.

If thats too much you could try a swinging pickup which some engines use as well.

Heres a machine thats rated for 55* called the RoboGreen. Isuzu diesel powered. Unsure what modifications were made to the engine, but it doesnt self level, so they must be internal. Likely a mod to the pickup.

It is to go on a slope mower, and planning direct drive to the blade. Only looking for around 10-15hp, but need the appropriate oil pickup.

On industrial engines you can pick the deep oil pan for 45 degree tilt. Thats all it is, make a deeper oil pan and put the pickup tube down into it.

a two stroke engine could possibly fit the requirement.

Possible a 2 stroke, but actually having a hard time finding anything. Don't seem too common these days, around 10-12hp with vertical shaft and electric start.

Not really, the initial power has to come from somewhere and so while hydraulics could work would still need a engine to drive the pump.

My dad has had 2 ultralight airplanes. A Rotax 2 stroke might fit the bill... being 2 stroke you could mount any direction needed. Be worth looking into. They are also widely used in snowmobles.
