I sure hope you guys are wrong about the Maytags, since we bought a front loading Maytag washer and dryer last year. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

2 years ago we were in your shoes. Looking for a front loader for efficiency and less water consumption. Did a ton a research and went with the Fisher Paykel toploader. We easily do 18 loads a week, it uses ~15 gallons of water and has a 1000+ rpm spin that cuts your dry time in half. Other than cleaning the cold water filter every 3 - 4 months it's been a fantastic unit. It was cheaper than the front loaders we were looking at, has a bigger capacity and you don't have to get on your knees to load/unload. No transmission or belts, it's a 24v direct drive unit. I understand folks have modified them for off the grid living. We picked ours up at Lowes, ~$600.

I had the Maytag Neptune front load washer and dryer. I had owned them for several years and never had a problem besides the mold growning on the washer gasket.
I read about the computer board going bad on them and wouldn't you know it as soon as I found out about it, mine went out.
I researched it again and went with the Fisher - Paykel washer and dryer that JJT mentioned. Seems to work just fine. The dryer is a strange unit. It is a top loader also.
I bought ours from a local appliance store.

We purchased a Kenmore (Whirlpool) Calypso model about 4 years ago. It is a top loader, but very little water use. It tosses the clothes while a continual flow of water is running through them. It has a huge capacity, partly because it does not requre the agitator in the center of the tub.
Initially, we had control board issues that were covered under warranty. At the recommendation of the Sears repairman, we installed surge protector at the outlet. He said the control boards are very sensitive to power surges. We had the same issues with a new dishwasher control circuit (Maytag), so we installed surge suppressors on everthing that had an a circuit board controller. We had no further problems. The washer does a very fine job and we have definitely put it to the test. We also have eight children, so you can understand the washer gets plenty of use!

We just replaced our old Asko with a Bosch. I really like the Bosch much better, but having said that, it is a new machine vs. one that was 10 plus years old. All the newer front loaders seem to have much bigger doors and drums then in the past.

We had a calypso 3 or 4 years ago that was leaving gray streaks on the clothes. We ment through a couple of months of service calls and they never could figure it out. My wife complained to the lady who sold it to us at Sears and she said what do you want your money back or to come in and pick out a different machine. We got a kenmore He3. It is all right so far. Pretty cool. We like Sears and Sears probably didn't lose much when they sold it at the outlet store. A couple of weeks ago we got a letter about a calypso class action suit.

Bird, Maytag washer and dryer, dishwasher, refrigerator, 2 years and 4 months old. Both the washer and dryer had their circuit boards (computer) replaced after one year of service. Several hundred dollars to repair those. April 17th, 2006 we had a part replaced in the refrigerator because it was not cold enough in the fridge and would not freeze in the freezer. $208.00 later it is fixed. Repairman said he keeps Maytag parts on his trucks as these go out about every two years. He said to stay away from Maytag. Wish I would have known that when I built this house. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Sorry to hear that Stanley. We bought the MDE2400AYW dryer and MAH2400AWW washer from Sears 5/4/05 so they're almost a year old. They replaced a 10 year old Kenmore washer and dryer that were still working. I had replaced the pump in the washer when it sprung a leak after about 5 years, so it had been another 5 years, and my wife thought for some reason that the dryer was on its last legs. The main reason we bought what we did, and paid a premium price, was because I wanted the small, compact units because of the size of the spot they occupied in our mobile home. I wanted to have room to move them in and out easily if I ever had to work on them. And I thought the small ones would also be lighter.

OK, I made more dumb mistakes. #1, We bought them in May, then in September we sold the mobile home and bought a house with plenty of room in the garage for standard sized machines. #2, they're small, but that washing machine has got to be heaviest one I ever moved (or maybe I'm just getting weaker in my old age). #3, with all the fancy electronics, I'll never work on them myself anyway.

However, I did one other thing different. I generally do not believe in or buy extended warranties, but in this case, I did buy their 3 year warranty when I bought these machines. And so far, they're working well.
