Hi everyone.
recently purchased a Titan implements flail mower. Dealer says to put high temp grease in the gearbox instead of the n46 hydraulic and gear oil as the manual says.
Anyone have any experience to share by doing this? He states that this is how they service all of their gearboxes.

I have an old 3pt hitch spreader that I bought years ago and the gearbox on it leaked all the oil out and I was in a tight to use it and didn"t know until I hooked it up to the tractor and checked it, anyways I pumped it full of general purpose grease out of a grease gun and have been using it that way ever since with no problems and while a flail mower gearbox is probably going to get considerably hotter than the gearbox on my spreader I don"t believe that you will ever have any problems by filling it with high temp grease or corn head grease as I have heard of many people doing it on bush hog style rotary mowers rather than replacing a gearbox seal.

Every situation is a bit different and while it certainly would never be a manufactures recommendation.
I do know of several gear boxes that have been filled with different mixes of grease and gear lube.
Some have worked out well and lasted many years. Some have not lasted long.
One I know about lost a seal and the bearings where bad towards the end of a harvest season,
it got a grease fitting installed in place of the fill plug and got several pumps of grease hourly while
in use to get through the season and was then torn down to rebuild.
I had a winter sander that the gear lube would leak out when it was parked, filled it about half full of #2 grease
and half 90-140 gear lube and used it for several winters.

I've used "corn head" grease in leaky gearbox situations. It's like a 0 0 0 grade and doesn't take much heat to make it folwable and might provide a little more lubrication than regular grease.

I wouldn't do it in a new gearbox. Oil lubes & cools better, not to mention is what the manufacturer recommends.

On the flip side I've done it on an old beat-up flail mower. Wasn't worth it to buy new seals to prevent oil leaks, so it got grease. Ran fine for a few years & probably would again if I dug it out of the grass. Whole thing was pretty beat-up (bought for $100) so got replaced. Keep it as a spare though.

It would work & probably outlast the rest of the impliment. But grease eats up more HP. Go with oil if you can.

Ask him what grade number to use.

I've got a rotary cutter that has had nothing but "any old grease" (old means, new grease that's old) in it for more than 20 years, still works perfectly and that's all it's ever going to get from now on.
