Yesterday the gold dome of Iowa's first capital building in Iowa City was destroyed in a fire started by workmen using a heat gun to remove asbestos paint.

The head of the restoration project stated that none of the contractors had permits to use heat guns for paint removal.

Very sad indeed.

Yes, that is sad to see something historical lost do to stupidity.

The lowest bidder wins!!! Just because they didn't have permits doesn't mean it was spelled out in the original contract. Still does not remove the contractor from his responsiblility. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif/w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

I do not know how they treat historic buildings in Iowa, but when working with the US Army to install new telecommunication infrastructure we had to abid by all existing local, state, and federal laws regarding historic buildings (WWII wooden barracks would fall into this category believe it or not). Were not allowed to dig or cut archeological areas without surveys, were prevented from nailing into or drilling into interior or exterior walls, had to submit plans to historic preservation agencies prior to doing the work, etc. It was a painful but interesting aspect of planning a job.
