Glad that you walked away. Pedestrian crosswalks are WAY too easy to overlook... unlike road intersections which are marked with signs or lights.

You're right... there is quite a distance between intersections and this is just a crosswalk with one small side street perpendicular on one side of the street like a "T"

Good post as a reminder to all of us that when we're pedestrians, it's a jungle out there.

Speaking of jungles, several months ago I was walking across a wide city street crosswalk in a residential district. I'm a slow walker so by the time I approached the street's centerline, the woman driver I'm about to disparage was probably a block away- plenty of time to see a pedestrian walking that first half across the street. We converged at the centerline and it was apparent that she intended to roll thru the stop sign, completely oblivious to me, as I was just about to step in front of her Escalade. She saw me at the last second, slammed on the brakes, pulled her cell phone away from her face, and mouthed, "Sorry!" I employed my own sign language, holding my pretend cell phone to my ear and used my other hand to slash my neck. Well, that set her off and let's just say she speed away indignantly.

Sorry for the long story but that incident has completely changed the assumptions I make about other drivers. Just because they're in your space doesn't mean they see you.

I could be wrong, but it seems that when people get in their automobiles it's like a cocoon, isolating them from the world outside of them. This attitude predates cell phones...
Years ago I was riding my little Yamaha 400 2 wheeler on a sideroad in Bangor Maine when a woman pulled out of a parking lot in a pickup... I hit the brake, kicked the rear wheel out and skidded out around her, stopping with my helmet inches from the plow toplink. As I worked to get my bike into neutral so that I could restart it she was swearing out the window to get the F@#$ out of her way... if she had been a man she would have come out of that same window forcibly and we could have continued the discussion in person.

Very true... the driver jumped out of his very clean late model sedan and was very apologetic... said he simply didn't see me and based on the angle I'm sure the windshield post was in the line of sight.

The only thing that is kind of bugging me is the arch of my left foot... I'm sure it got stretched when the car was pushing me.

There was no eye contact that I can remember... there was not time to look up.

As to food... any direction is food... from a 50 year old mexican family restaurant... fast food, sports bars, etc.

Never thought going to Jack was taking my life into my hands. Some of the people I work with will drive to get across the street because that crosswalk makes them nervous.

Sister in law was walking behind a ramp truck with a car on it in a grocery store parking lot. Evidently the car was not properly chained down and when she was behind the truck, the car let loose and hit her. Messed her up permanently. Initially she thought she would be okay, but later decided to sue since she was not improving and needed a cane (she was in her 50s). The tow truck company acted surprised but obviously had to pay out.

Glad you are here to type about it. Could have been much more serious.

I've had a time or two when you can't see something due to the pillar of the windshield.
