Hogs!

   / Hogs! #71
wow...I have a good friend that actually paid for a hog hunt several years ago (TN as I recall). But reading this thread explains why the Wis DNR does not want them to establish here and hence the orders to shoot on sight (although they do tend to go nocturnal so will be akin to coon hunting I think). My uncle raised a small bunch (maybe 10) of pigs...they got loose and tore up the huge front yard pretty bad in a 24 hour period (I mowed it so I know). If they do get here, now I have to build a slaughter house, a walk-in cooler and a proper smoke house...on the other hand, might be worth the effort...(probably not as are most of my ideas)...

Just saw this picture on FB. One more good reason to kill as many hogs as possible

I am almost 100% certain those are javelina (banded peccary), not pigs. I'm not saying pigs don't eat fawns, just that I don't believe that is a photo of pigs.

I build and sell hog traps so I'm a little biased but if you have a hog problem and want to eradicate them, trapping is by far the most effective method. Hunting them just disperses them and turns one sounder into 3 or 4, running them with dogs just makes them the neighbors problem and small box traps (which I sell a lot of) are not really effective in a true eradication program. If you really want to put a dent in the population, you need to use large corral traps and be patient to be sure that you've got the entire group going into the trap before you set the trigger.

I build a cellular trap door that will send pictures to your phone and you can close via a text or phone call, it's extremely effective. Here are a couple of photos from one where they caught 29 pigs in a single go. The customer that sent me these has 2400 acres under cultivation so pigs are a very serious problem for them.

I can't say for sure either what they are and could go either way on what they are. It's more of an unusual picture then anything else. While I've never seen a hog kill or carry off a fawn, I don't have any doubt that if the opportunity presented itself, they would do so.
