i'm waiting for someone to design a machine to skim the surface of the sand, separate the oily stuff, and put the bulk of the sand back down. I envision something that looks like a Zamboni (sp?) but with wider tires. All those guys with shovels look like the definition of useless.

Chuck

They have something like that for trash, seaweed etc. The oil on the beaches seems super sticky though, would be hard to deal with. Maybe one of those construction roller machines with 'super absorbent' pads on the rollers ;)

I went down to my favorite beach today at Grand Isle to see what things looked like. They have canceled the world famous Tarpon Rodeo next month and all the beaches are closed and full of cleanup crews cleaning up the mess. :(

This breaks my heart. It is unreal we have such progress in finding and drilling, yet we have not a plan of action, equipment or processes to handle spills.

No telling what is underwater, sight unseen in the gulf.

Nope. The sand goes across a shaker screen. Below the screen is an array of mannequin torsos with swimsuits on. Those swimsuits collect all the clean sand. Almost there ......
Dave.

.....Next, the swimsuits go into the onboard washing machine, washed with Dawn and all the sand is spun out to lay on the beach again!!

I wonder if these Costners are farm boys. I would think that to come up with an idea like this they must have had to pour milk into a cream separater. The heavy denser milk comes out one spout, the lighter less dense cream out a different spout.

The Dutch are supposed to have a bunch of oil skimming boats/ships that are very efficient. Better than what we have in the gulf. The Feds won't let them into the country because of the Merchant Marine Act. The act was/is supposed to preserve the US Merchant Marine. We can see how well that has worked over the last 90 years.

Now what the act has to do with cleaning up an oil spill is beyond my understanding.

I believe the main reason we are not using them is because of the price they want to charge the US to use them. Several dozen countries offered to help the US with the oil spill for a price including the UK, Israel and Romania. The only country that offered to do anything at all for free was Mexico.

It doesn't matter if we give them several billion dollars a year in federal aid.

And if the price comment is true..... what idiot bean counter came up with a price?

I mean really, think about it! A price? On exactly what? The destroyed sea? The beaches? The states economies? Peoples lives? A way of living, that is probably gone?

Grrr.....

Between our so called Government experts, called in, assembled just for this crisis, the coast guard, the government regulatory agency in charge, and the oil industry.... no one can even get a ball-park figure of how MUCH is SPEWING from this leak.

And they want to put a price on clean-up. And turn help away because it cost a lot?

Grrr.....
