The Dutch are supposed to have a bunch of oil skimming boats/ships that are very efficient. Better than what we have in the gulf. The Feds won't let them into the country because of the Merchant Marine Act. The act was/is supposed to preserve the US Merchant Marine. We can see how well that has worked over the last 90 years.

Now what the act has to do with cleaning up an oil spill is beyond my understanding.

Dan ...how about you show us where you came up with this one?

And if the price comment is true..... what idiot bean counter came up with a price?

I mean really, think about it! A price? On exactly what? The destroyed sea? The beaches? The states economies? Peoples lives? A way of living, that is probably gone?

Grrr.....

Between our so called Government experts, called in, assembled just for this crisis, the coast guard, the government regulatory agency in charge, and the oil industry.... no one can even get a ball-park figure of how MUCH is SPEWING from this leak.

And they want to put a price on clean-up. And turn help away because it cost a lot?

Grrr.....

RT...I feel as bad about this as anyone here. It seems to me that that emotion can easily lead to poitical finger pointing.

Not every gulf state allows oil drilling. Louisianna chose to exploit one resources and put at risk another.

That's what euro-socialism will lead to, better skimmer boats. :) Seriously, I am curious as to why the Dutch have invested in better skimmers than we have.

Royal Dutch Shell operates primarily out of The Hague, Netherlands and London, England. On the other hand, Royal Dutch Shell has an abysmal record of oil spills and no clean-up in the Niger River Delta, Nigeria; Africa.

I thought BP was supposed to pay the costs?

"The U.S. Government has apparently reconsidered a Dutch offer to supply 4 oil skimmers. These are large arms that are attached to oil tankers that pump oil and water from the surface of the ocean into the tanker. Water pumped into the tanker will settle to the bottom of the tanker and is then pumped back into the ocean to make room for more oil. Each system will collect 5,000 tons of oil each day.

One ton of oil is about 7.3 barrels. 5,000 tons per day is 36,500 barrels per day. 4 skimmers have a capacity of 146,000 barrels per day. That is much greater than the high end estimate of the leak. The skimmers work best in calm water, which is the usual condition this time of year in the gulf.

These systems were developed by the Dutch as a safety system in case of oil spills from either wells or tankers. The Dutch have off shore oil development and also import oil in tankers. Their economy, just like ours, runs on oil. They understand that the production and use of oil has dangers and they wanted to be ready to cope with problems like spills. The Dutch system has been used successfully in Europe.

The Dutch offered to fly their skimmer arm systems to the Gulf 3 days after the oil spill started. The offer was apparently turned down because EPA regulations do not allow water with oil to be pumped back into the ocean. If all the oily water was retained in the tanker, the capacity of the system would be greatly diminished because most of what is pumped into the tanker is sea water.

As of June 8th, BP reported that they have collected 64,650 barrels of oil in the Gulf. That is only a fraction of the amount of oil spilled from the well. That is less than one day's rated capacity of the Dutch oil skimmers."

Let's see, they don't allow water with some oil to be pumped back into the ocean so it's better just to leave all the oil in the ocean? Sounds logical :confused2:

The fact that these skimmers can collect that volume of oil is interesting. But to suggest that because they have that capacity that they could then recover all the oil in the gulf is absurd. And seemingly to futher to suggest that having these skimmers on hand can allow us to continue to recover oill in deep water without concern for the environment is just plain looney. It's happy talk like this that keeps getting us in trouble.

It would be nice if any number of these skimmers could be deployed to recover even a small percentage of the oil that continues to spill across the hundreds of thousands of square miles the spill encompasses. And in fact on May 23 BP purchased several skimmers to attempt to do just that.

Anyone ever heard that saying about closing the barn door after the horse is gone?

Oh, I'll point fingers, and there will not be any politics involved.

Here are the basic FACTS:

No one knows how many barrels are spewing on a daily basis.

Oil is coming on shore every minute. Based on a well problem over 60 days ago.

People are waiting in line for food and sustanance because they cannot work.

Now it seems, we politely declined a proven technology from another country, due to cost and regulations.
