I emailed the guy about the mini split system again, the inital estimate about a year ago was 5k, with two systems. one that would cool our bedroom, and one that would cool our great room. I asked him if we could do half of the system, and then when we had enough come back and do the other half. hes a real nice guy and was working with us last time to get the best system at the best price. after seeing his estimate vs sears (8-9k) i was going with him hands down.
Your right the cooling season is not that long here, but on some days its really bad. The basement is not finished, so ther really is no room to stay down there. plus the dogs are down there. As for cutting a hole in the bedroom wall, our walls slope. And the ones that dont have the dressers against them. There is just no where to put them. The weather broke a bit yesterday, had a bad thunder/lighting storm, dumped a ton of water but broke the humidity and heat.
thanks for the suggestions all.
we havent melted yet, so i guess we can get through this week. lol

Would it help to replace one of the sky lights with one that can open to vent off some of the heat located in that high spot of the house? I think they run in the $500 range.

Some friends with sky lights in an attic conversion made some inserts of foam insulation board for their sky lights to fight the summer heat. Seems to have helped.

For the upstairs in the barn - kids play room and quests bed room - I bought split unit on ebay. Installed it myself and the plumber - neighbour - just connected copper lines and charged it for $200. Now the area is 40 feet by 16 feet and this little thing can cool it down even in the hottest day (the roof has 6 inch fiberglass insulation) and heat it up even if the temp outside is only 40 F. Well spent money - and it wasn't that dificult to put it in. Just little bit of wiring and soft copper line routing.
