Dave,
I like you mist system idea. I have a couple of the mist heads and use them once in a while when I sit out doors on a hot day. Never thought of using them to cool the hot side of my house. My well water is so cold that I can't keep my hand in it for any length of time and should do a great job of cooling things off. The misters use very little water as well and as the water evaporates it will help cool things even more.

There are AC units made using this same principle. Swamp, or evaporative coolers either drip water across a replaceable medium or mist the air to drop the ambient air temperature. These types of AC units are cheap to run and work well in dry climates. However in humid areas they are of little value as they do not dehumidify like a normal AC unit.

Of course you are right, and I have used swamp coolers at times.

The big difference with the mist system I described is that the humidity generated by evaporating the water stays outside. With a swamp cooler, the humidity is added to the inside air. This allows effective cooling at much higher ambient humidity levels, levels where a swamp cooler will make the inside of your house a soggy mess.

I bought split unit on ebay. Installed it myself and the plumber - neighbour - just connected copper lines and charged it for $200

Thats what i thought about doing too...only one problem, where i need to install it is pushing the upperlimits of the max install height. If i install it where it needs to be then i am over the limit. From where the compressor would sit to where the split system would go is over 22' and from reading the manuals it should be under 15.

yesterday i called a friend of a friend (you know how that goes) and he said he would write me up a quote. it sounded promising.
