home made yard plugger

Here is couple pics of home made yard plugger I started this weekend with my son.
Should be around 430 lbs when filled with water.

used old 50 gal water heater to build this and 3 joints of 1/2 gas pipe.
Will have 132 spikes at 4 1/4 inches apart.

I will post more pics when its done and painted.

I thought that was a medieval torture device. Looks good. I only have my little Agri-Fab plug aerator that I pull behind my lawn tractor.

I'll be interested in how this works. I've considered building a plug type aerator but I thought I'd have to buy the pluggers. If your design works well and pulls plugs I'll have to give it a try. I had thought of something like that but thought they would just fill up solid and not actually pull the plugs.

Good point. They may fill with dirt and become a spike aerator vs a plug aerator.

It's not done yet and it will be a plugger when I'm done with it.
After all plug cutters are welded on I will drill threw the base of them all 132 of them evil looking things.
I will also cut channels in the end of the tank to let plugs out as it rolls.
Top will have box built to hold a bunch of case iron I have laying around.
Should weigh around 450 lbs when done.
Last but not least I'm going to add wheels that roll down to pick spikes off ground.

maybe I am missing something, I thought in your first post you indicated you are going to fill it with water, later you indicate you are going to drill into the tank to let the plugs clear out of the plug cutters
Please elaborate, I want a plug cutter and figured I would have to buy one

Looks like an interesting build!

I saw one that had a piece of that plastic wind skirting you see on trailers. It was attached like a broom to wipe the drum clean. It worked pretty good.

If you drill through the spikes how will it hold water. Or did you change you plan

I had seen one somewhat similar on another forum.
The problem they had was the spikes are on the centerline of the cylinder similar to yours and it didn't dig in that well.
Ended up he had to move them so they were closer to tangent to the outside of the cylinder so they were closer to vertical wen the cylinder was rotating.....Mike

Looks like a lot of welding putting the spikes on!!!

If you drill through the spikes how will it hold water

Through the SIDE of the spikes, not through the center of the spikes, into the tank

Ok failed to say change of plans with filling it with water sorry.

I have used angle and built a frame to hole weighs should be around 400 lbs with weighs on it.

Here is the newest pics I have just need to paint it tomorrow.

after thought after building this I could have built it to mount to 3 pt on my tractor but to late now it's done.

carlav, I also built one like this but a spiker style. Welded 1/2" nuts onto an old water tank and then welded 4" rods onto the nuts. I was pulling it with a 25 hp Steiner 4x4 tractor and it didn't work so well. Made a mess pulling it around a corner, even wide sweeping turns would make a mess. It would just rip slots in the turf. I'm thinking you will have to add lifting wheels to make corners. I also welded the spikes inline just like you did and driving it across any hard surface was like riding a bronco bull, should have wedled them on an arc so they were always in contact with the ground. I've since made one for the front of my Steiner and it works much better. I also have a few 3 pth ones but very seldom use them. Mine are bought at auction sales and usually come from golf courses.

hello all ,

Sorry for the delay in getting back with everyone but wife wanted a new rose bed and raised garden so I had to get it done.(2 weekends)
Happy wife= Happy husband I will put a pic of the rose bed as well.

Yard plugger is finished and painted and works pretty good but needs to rain.
Ground is so hard around here even with 400 lbs added to it still wont sink.
Now in the horse pasture it worked real good but ground has had horses on it for 3 yrs now.

I will post a video of the plugger at work when I get my new phone next week
