Home Security On my mind again

Good point Roy. Many people plan for thing's like a home invasion and totaly forget about the most common problem they are likely to encounter, a fire.

I have my fire escape plan well rehersed and a cable ladder I can put out the window of my bedroom. I also have fire extinguishers all over the house and garages.

...there has been an upswing in home invasions in the rural areas of southern PA

Here in Kauliofrnia a family was selling there expensive puppies in the newspaper, a couple of guys came out to look at the dogs, and pistol whipped the family, and took the dogs.

How about that 80-90 year old lady in New York that got pummeled in her stairway, and that 80-90 year old vet that was beat senseless for his car.

I had a guy point a gun at me and my family as we were coming out of Disney a few years ago, on th freeway, I had to do some evasive driving techniques to escape, and call the Highway Patrol - they got him.

Man you hate to walk around like you live in Baghdad.....but?

Roy said it much better than I did.

It's not fear so much as prepairedness.. and as Roy pointed out.. it isn't just about crime.. Roy has a fire plan. Down here in huricaneville - fl my family has a meet-up and contact point ( as well as alternate locations to meet and keep in touch ) in case of power and utility outages for extended times.. like our state saw a couple years ago.

The more prepaired you are in an event.. the better able you are to handle it.. and deal with the aftermath.

With no self defense plan you have to make 100% of it up on the fly AND be safe. If you have a plan. you at least have some basic outline to fal back on while trying to stay safe.

There has been an upswing in home invasions in the rural areas of southern PA in the last year. Not enough to make it a crime wave though.

We also know how we're going to get out in the event of a fire.

I agree with "... being prepared ..." . Do you know that in Canada I can't even keep a load gun in my home. It must be "properly and safely" stored with at the very least a trigger lock.

A fire drill... I'll really have to think about that.

If i were a criminal.. that would be a very comforting thought to know that if I was breaking into a good law abiding citizens home that I would have a much less likely chance of being shot... kinda like a great big 'gun free' zone north of america...

Well We are still pretty spooked up here on Blossom Hill. I drove through the neighborhood at dusk and about three quarters of the houses have all their outside lights on. I'm guessing the new ones that don't have lights on have alarm systems and of course a couple of the guys are good old boys who have guns and dogs.:) People are very nervous. There is a very unpleasant rumor going around that it was a gang initiation thing. You know go out and kill a family. The alarm guys were across the street. I bet they have all the work they want.

Wow...I'd never would have thought about a gang initiation! But there was an unlocked door too...that's what really concerns me about this tragedy...who left the door unlocked?

BTW, Pennwalk..did you know those folks?

Also, one more thing about being prepared...don't forget the flashlight(s)! I like the long aluminum maglite type as they'd make a pretty good weapon too.

Yeah, I knew that about our friends north. Darn shame too. Is Harper as anti-gun as the previous PM?

I know the Gun Registry has been a total (and very expensive) failure...what is Ontario's stance on the registry?

We used to live across the street from the family. Their kids fed our cat when we were away and out kids fed their cat when they were away. Their son sold us popcorn and our girls sold then cookies. We admired their garden. They were good neighbors. It is hard to understand that they are gone.

As far as the details of the crime all we are getting is what the media reports so it is hard to be sure we are getting all the facts or even the true story. It would be useful to know if their house was open. Also the house was behind a hedge. Did that make them a target?
