Moss,
To stray from topic a bit, but how is heating with locust? I’ve always heard it can burn too hot, be hard to control, warp stoves, etc...?

You have to send your money somewhere. I spent a good percentage of it on tools and equipment. I’ll skip the Miami vacation. Purely from a logistical standpoint my pro saw cost about what the wood I’ll burn in a year is worth and makes the job a lot easier and faster. I’ll save that much again off the gas bill.

There are other brands that are just as good or better than Stihl, but their in your face advertising is what makes them move.

Stihl has the most market penetration due to sales and support.

It sounds like Dolmar needs to build a better sales network if they are ever going to be a big brand. Assuming they want to be.

I do not doubt they are good saws, I just do not think they are better saws than Echo, Husky and Stihl.

I also have an old Craftman 18" saw that I got for free from a neighbor. It uses the same bars and chains as the Poulan.

It most likely IS a Poulan. My old Craftsman 18" is.

"Dolkita" (sic) is far and away better than any of the more commercially recognized names in saws out there. Yeah, it's a pretty bold statement... In my experience: far greater power-to-weight ratio, unsurpassed antivibe, better fuel economy and lower overall service cost plus better dealer support than any of the others - where you can find a dealer that is.

Market saturation through the box stores or even privately owned dealers on every streetcorner just doesn't equal the quality that everyone is convinced exists.

My opinion, and like Grandma used to say...

Isn’t dolkita, dolmar, and makita the same thing?

Makita ChainSaws

MAKITA AND DOLMAR ARE MERGING INTO A SINGLE BRAND: MAKITA POWER EQUIPMENT. Under the Makita brand, this integration gives users a full range of professional chain saws for forestry, farm, and occasional use.

I have a 50cc Stihl and a 55 CC Echo, both from 1990 and 1998. Both run pretty good but they weren't fast enough because of their .325 chains. I can remember taking almost a tank of gas going through a 36" oak with either of these saws. It was painful.

I just bought a 60 CC Echo higher end saw with 3/8" chain last year. The Echo will chew threw a 18" log approx. in 20 seconds where the other ones will take a minute plus for the same cut. It may not sound like much time and it may not be, but it is 45 seconds less wrestling with a pokey saw. It just makes life a lot easier.

With that extra 45 seconds you’ll cut 3 times as much wood in a day before you get tired. If people would quit bashing nice things before they tried them things would be a lot less confusing here. You’ll never hear the pro saw owner, GrandL owner, or backhoe owner bashing them.

A 5 or 10cc difference in displacement plus the difference between a 0.325 and 0.375 (0.02 difference) saw chain is not going to make a 60 second to 20 second difference in cutting speed on an 18” peice if wood if both the saw and chain are maintained. Something else is wrong with your 50 and 55cc saws.
