Its a lucky person who doesn't have problem getting the PTO connected every now and then. When I use mine, I make sure the tractor PTO shaft is clean of dirt and full of grease and WD40, the same goes for the PTO drive shaft.

Isn't WD40 kind of the enemy of grease?....their website says "WD-40 is also great when it comes to removing and cleaning grease, grime, rust, and other marks from most surfaces." I guess the question is are you better off with light-thin lubricant like WD40 (or Fluid Film that I'd prefer) versus a grease? Grease does attract dirt over time which is a drawback and the parts involved aren't really moving (well they move together) so clean with Fluid film would make sense.

use a bunji to cradle the pto shaft under the aframe.. that way you only have to guide it and not hold the entire weight. Use a long handled screwdriver thru the pto yoke if you need to spin it a tad to engage tractor pto stud.

keep yoke and stub end clean and lubed... including engagement collar or push button.

There's some times when it goes on great, other times when it doesn't. I'm going to try putting the PTO in gear ( tractor NOT running! ) first next time, at least one shaft won't be turning then.

All my PTO driven stuff is easy to turn while it's off the tractor, something like a tiller would be easier if the PTO stub could turn instead of the driven shaft.

A lot of us leave the tractor idling while they hook up the PTO, whether we'll admit it or not. I usually don't these days, but there were times when I did. Not a good way to go about your business, generally speaking.

Did anyone mention it helps a lot to have the pto lever positioned so that the shaft on the tractor isn't selected and locked into a fixed position? Being able to freely rotate it a degree or two is always helpful.

, but my tractor has no hydraulic capability except to drop when it is turned off so that can be a problem. I also think it would be nice if there was an auxillary electric hydraulic pump that would allow us to operate the hydraulics without having the tractor running. Don't know if that is possible or not, maybe a visit to the hydraulics section will help.

getcha a ford 6000 with a working accumulator.. fix ya right up once ya get over the jerk-o-matic trans.

don't help much if you have independent pto and a working pto brake..

Nice to have three PTO lever positions. Engaged, neutral, and Brake

Don't use the brake position unless wanting to shut off PTO quickly. Leave it in neutral to hook up PTO and that works well.

I use the same method someone else mentioned about leveling up the implement with the 3 pt. works well for me. WD 40 is not even really a lube(water displacer formula 40)

I have a question for the group, this is probably covered in another thread but seems valid here anyway. Do you connect the PTO shaft with the engine running, or maybe the bigger question is should you connect an implement with the tractor off?

I NEVER touch a PTO shaft connected to a tractor if the tractor is on. I will run something (like the mower conditioner) and get off the tractor and go BEHIND it, but if the tractor is on, I do not get in front of the feed or near anything moving.
