3-Point Hitch Hooking up PTO

I have been having a he11 of a time hooking up the PTO for my blower to the tractor. Limited space and needing to pull the yoke back while pushing the shaft on.

Anyway, I don't know in what threads I read it but a lot of people suggested using a bungee cord to take the weight of the shaft would make life easier.

Tried it today and instead of taking me 15 minutes to get the PTO on I had the blower completely hooked up including the PTO in under 3 minutes.

Just wanted to say thanks to TBN and all those that suggested this in the multiple threads, you have made my life much easier.

Don't do that.

Ignore the latch. Get the splines aligned and slipped on until it hits the latch. THEN manipulate the latch and slide it on the rest of the way.

That's sorta what I meant, I would get it started on the shaft and on as far as it would go then work the locking collar, but it was still a batch to get it on. With the bungee, not only was getting is started easier but dealing with the collar and getting it all the way on an locked in place was easier. Took seconds. I thought I was fighting with the collar and what I was really fighting was the weight of the PTO while I was bent over like a pretzel :duh:

There are "normal" days, then the really BAD days. I finally figured it all out and do exactly as Bruce (bcp) suggests. Getting the PTO shaft to engage the splines takes care of about 3/4 of the problem.

Had my tractor three years before I realized if the PTO shaft will free spin about 3/4 of a turn. Game changer.

My Branson has a 2 speed PTO. If I shift it into neutral the PTO shaft end will spin freely. Makes hooking up much easier.

Others may disagree, but I'd get rid of that shield around the PTO staff. That's what I did on mine, makes it way easier to attach/detach. Some of my attachments have a ring, others a pin lock, in both cases keep 'em well lubed.

That sounds tempting after my first ever pto hook up attempt on the logging winch with a ring
There is very little room between the winch and the pto; access is so restricted that having the shield off would make it much easier to just get it on
let alone pull and snap it into place.
However, I use the winch so little and have no other pto driven implements that I will leave it on for now.

I didn't take my shield off, but did remove the plastic bell at the tractor end. No way to get around that to the latch.

I'm surprised that no one mentioned raising the implement up so that the shaft is level with the PTO (ie: no bend) or to 'lanolin' spray/lubricate the splines prior to inserting.
