Horse, Cattle or Livestock Trailer? What is the difference?

If Karen hasn't trained horses successfully, when the time comes, they will need to be taken to a professional trainer.

A trailer for exotics is quite different from a cattle trailer. Look at what the people use to take stuff to exotic auctions. I think that higher, wider, more enclosed, darker, will be the general direction. I only know a little about exotics, but understand stress can be a VERY significant killer.

You said "exotic pets"... I think of pets as critters that will eat out of your hand and let you brush their coats and follow you around and are not dangerous.

On the horses, I'm not very involved in the whole thing other then getting the land ready for them. The longer they stay where they are at, the longer I have to finish the fence and build them a barn. I have 99 posts left to drill on the fence, the barn is still just an idea and the pasture is a mess from clearing more trees to open it up. When done, they will have five acres of mostly grass and a dozen or so shade trees. The barn is going to be more of a loafing shed with a storage room for supplies and feed. We want them to be able to get out of the rain if they want, and to be able to hold them if that becomes necessary.

I'll start a thread on the barn/loafing shed once I come up with a plan. We are still reading what we can find online. Any suggestions on what works and what doesn't would be appreciated. My current thought is to make it 12x36 with two stalls enclosed on three sides 12x12 with a swinging gate on the front that can be opened all the way and secured against one of the walls, or closed when needed and then a 12x12 enclosed room. Pretty simple and easy to build

The exotics will be pets in the sense that we will buy them and keep them on our land behind an 8 foot deer fence. We will provide food for them and make sure they have fresh water. We will do what we can to make their habitat beneficial for them. There will be no petting or interaction with them. Since 30 acres is such a small area for them, we will be limiting how many animals we have. We will also get animals that are primarily grazers like elk, fallow deer, axis deer and maybe oryx, blackbuck, addax or something like that. Some animals can be bought for a few hundred bucks as yearlings, others start out at several grand each. We are not wanting to be a breeding facility or raise them to sell, so the high dollar stuff is not going to happen. We wont have both sexes in there. With the deer species, it will be males only. Depending on what antelope we chose, it will probably be female's only. One of the terms that I like to remember is "not to create Noah's Arc" People who do this tend to want to get a couple of everything. That was my first inclination when I decided I wanted exotic pets, but after reading up on this and talking to those who have them, it's better to have just a few species that you really like that will do well in my climate.

The trailer is probably going to cost more then I want to spend, but I think having one trailer that does it all is going to be better then several trailers.

Eddie,

I built my own trailer because I didn't want a horse, cow or livestock trailer. And I got exactly what I wanted and at a lot better price.

The one thing I did notice when shopping around for units - two trailers, absolutely the same, right down to the grease used for the axle bearings.

Call the trailer a horse trailer and you can ask a lot more for it than if you call it a cattle trailer. That's when I decided to build my own. Hauling cow manure, large rocks, dirt & big logs does not know prestige.

Eby might be the tank of the real cowboy stock trailer along with Wilson like Lutt said. I hear the newer Featherlites and Exiss ar now built by Universal ? I like Keifers IMO lotta trailer for the $ and well built. Been looking locally at a stock Cherokee trailer been trying to arm wrestle with a private owner over price.
CM is another good trailer manufacture for a person wanting new on a budget or weekend hauler/ riders.

I'm kinda surprised nobody has mentioned Big Bend trailers. They are not known for horse trailers but cattle trailers. They do have some horse configurations. It sounds like most people, and Eddie, will use trailers for dual purposes. These trailers just seem to make sense and look to be well built from the few I've seen being used and the new ones I looked at in San Antonio at the rodeo.

They do seem to be heavy duty trailers. In the pictures on their website most of the trailers are light colored. Not too many reds or blacks. I've never seen a black Big Bend in use and they only had light colors at the show in San Antonio.

Honestly, until you are ready to start hauling frequently, see if you can rent a trailer. Tyler is sizable town; probably be able to rent.

When I originally had a horse some years back, I was close to riding trails and didn't really need a trailer. The couple of times I did, I rented a trailer.

Eddie, thanks for letting us know you are reading, listening, thinking and planning. Glad you are, seems to something you do.

No such thing as a perfect trailer. Or truck. Goosenecks are great, better pulling. The bumper pull seems to get overlooked, but I think it still a very relevant option. 16x6 steel bumper pull stock trailer will always have a broad market appeal and hold value. 28' canvas top, chopped back cowboy special is excellent if your a bull hauler, slant load with living quarters is wonder for folks that stay at a show. My suggestion is don't over buy or buy something that cannot be easily sold. Everybody who has owned a horse has wanted to get rid of one.
We just bought a new Delta stock trailer and I'm very pleased with it. Originally went to buy a WW, looked at a fine Neckover. First load of cattle on it in picture. Turbo messed up in my wife's truck, mine was in no shape for a trip, borrowed this 1/2 ton z71. 26 hours, 6 head, 1 boar hog, 0 trailer brakes.

In my area, bugs are a big concern. Our horses can go in and out as they choose - the paddock and out back to their 6 acre pasture. But they spend time in the barn where they urinate all of the time. We pick up the barn twice daily, but the urine lingers and is what keeps the bugs away despite the large open door. They step outside and they are swarmed with gnats, deer flies, and mosquitoes. They step into the barn, it is cooler and there are no bugs. They tend to head out when they want some grass and it's breezy- less bugs.
I'd consider that in your barn plans - closed in enough to get out from the sun and bugs.
Moving ahead is what makes life worthwhile.
Good luck.
