Hot temps, don't know how southerners do it

101 yesterday with a heat index of 105. The humidity is still kind of low in the mid 80's. When the humidity gets into the high 90 at those temps, it starts to bother me, but so far, I'm out there all day working on finishing off a fence. Next week I start on a deck.

It's a dry heat where my ranch is. But it will get very hot - 112 is the hottest I've seen myself, but others in the valley say that 120s have happened. (But lots of things are SAID in that valley!)

The trades people just seem to know how to deal with it. I don't exactly know how. But to put roofing on at 108 degrees is beyond imagination to me. I personally start to slow down in the mid-80s. Quit with anything above mid-90s.

Not that it's impossible for me to work. But I just don't feel that I need to.

The local farmers out this way do what others say, as a way of life. They will start at 4 or 5am, then quit before noon.

One of the very nice aspects about this area is that every night it cools off to the 60s. Every single night. If you have a newer house, with modern/extensive insulation, you can cool the house down in the early mornings, then close all windows and stay cool for the day. At one point my wife and I were planning a new house in the area. It was very interesting to see engineering reports that showed no air conditioner needed at 110 degrees.

But I remember the summer weather in Rockies - that was something to die for.

Yep, by Memorial Day, it's usually pretty warm around here, but on May 31, 1995, I came across Monarch Pass on U.S. 50 in Colorado at 1:30 in the morning and there was snow there and it was 28 degrees.

Most of the time i will be working in the heat, and sweating real bad.... and then notice that I'm getting to hot and then my wife shuts me down:D

The spray bottle with water helps me a lot to get cooled down, and the fan on my tractor helps too.... and i always take a round igloo cooler with either ice water or ice tea with me.

My father-in-law was on a strip mining job picking blackberries when the temp. was in the upper 90s and high humidity....He was on his ATV & he had a fan mounted on the handlebars, and got real hot while picking the berries, and he made it back to his ATV and turned on the fan and let it blow in his face for a while.

He told us that he was so hot and the fan probably saved his life... and he was back there by his self.... I always notice that when you pick blackberries you can get so hot and get real hot before you really notice it.

The main thing when working in heat is to drink plenty of water, and take breaks when you start getting hot.

Today I worked at an outdoor event where there were bunches of tourists. My buddy and I noticed first thing this morning that most of the folks attending were way over weight and up there in age, and we were guessing that most of them were from northern states. This was in Charleston, SC, and the temp hit 98 degrees today. The EMS trucks were making regular rounds the whole day and there was never a time when there wasn't one waiting in the street out front. Some folks were having trouble making it to the front gate. It's sad really to see folks that much out of shape venture into this kind of weather. It really separates the men from the boys, so to speak.

I agree. By the time this old 60 pounds overweight, 69 year old feller washed the condensor coils on the centrail air, mowed, edge, and trimmed the yard, ran the sprinkler most of the day, loaded my little Ranger with a kids' castle, a barbecue grill, several tools, hauled them to the owners' new home and unloaded, went to Home Depot for cement to use as oil dry, spread in on the garage floor, scrubbed it in, hosed down the garage floor, then loaded the Ranger again with a table saw and 4 big pots with small trees, and a smoker, took them to the owners' new home and unloaded and came home and took a shower and made a frozen margarita he was almost worn out. The NWS said it was only 101 degrees out there.:D And yep, my wife says she's afraid I'm gonna kill myself, and I say, "So?":D

I remember as a boy here in NC we had a whole house fan located on the back porch. Would bring in air at night to sleep by but it was still hot.

My dad purchased his first window air conditioner for his bedroom. I think I was around 5 years old at the time. Eventually, all bedrooms had air so that we could at least sleep in the cool at night.

I also remember him trading in a 63 Olds Super 88 for a 66 that had air conditioning.

You guys are making me feel real old now.

I mowed 7 1/2 acres of grass today and it was 94deg. with high humidity.... I drank a 1/2 gallon of iced tea, and had a fan on the tractor blowing on me..BUT..it was putting out hot air and i had to turn it off until i got under the trees in the shade.

While mowing i was using a spray bottle and spraying cold water on me, and i also took a bandanna and put it in cold water & wrapped it around my neck.

So i had iced tea to drink, a fan running, a spray bottle with cold water, a canopy and a wet cold bandanna... and my wife still tried to shut me down:D....Until i said you can take over:p
