Hot temps, don't know how southerners do it

Hot weather is like cold weather...you get acclimated to it. I always carry a small sweat towel to wipe the sweat off and swish gnats, (like a horse's tail). I rotate shirts, (hose the wet sweaty one off and lay it out to dry), replace it with the other dry one and so on. It feels good to put on a dry shirt after being sweaty, it's a mental thing. Drink lots of water, and wet down your arms and face while drinking. I have move the dog away from my spot in front of the big fan in the workshop. Dogs are fan hogs...

Dogs are fan hogs...

Most, but not our goofy chihuahua. She spends most of her time in the air-conditioned house, but she'll go right out there and lie down and stretch out in the sun, sometimes on concrete that's so hot I wouldn't want to walk on it barefoot. Many years ago, we had a German Shepard that loved the water; thought being sprayed with the water hose was great fun, but this chihuahua hates to get wet. My wife has to take her by surprise to give her a bath, because if the dog thinks she's going to get a bath, she'll go hide under a bed. But once caught, she doesn't fight it.:D

We used to have a German Shepherd named Charlie who would go to a body of water (stream, lake, pond) and lie down with his head on the land and his body in the water. That was one smart dog!

Hot Temps, Don't Know How Southern Dogs Do It...

usually where I find the dogs if I take them outside when I work...

I'd agree. That said, I wish the University of South Carolina would change it's nickname. The name throws you off a little when you see the nickname plastered on all the t-shirts in town:D

That's a pile of dogs, Sig! Is that 4 of them under there...or is that your feet I see in the back??? Just kidding....

When I am under something working...my dog does not know the difference between a wrench or hammer...but he sure does like to try helping out anyways.

I know what you mean...Go Cocks!

Bird, a good friend of mine has a chihuahua. When in the boat fishing, the dog loves to be picked up and dipped. Does not like to swim, though. That little guy knows how to stay cool in the boat.

I just had to chime in here. Hope you don't mind...

I always correct people when they say what nice weather we are having when it is clear and hot. Actually, that is a LACK of weather... he he. Semantics and all that.

Up here just East of the Coastal range and above the Columbia, we have some really weird weather. Tons of rain all winter as well as a couple major snow storms. Then summer (just starting here) we get 90s all the time and even regular 100s. That really sucks for me. I have never been able to climatize. I have lived in Chicago and that was too cold in the winter. Idaho Falls that was too much snow. Grew up in Los Alamos NM and I did not appreciate it while I was there. (still don't like the dirt and sagebrush). Lived in Orlando and did not like the moist heat. Lived in Scottdale AZ and did not like anything about it.

Funny about the Phoenix area... "But it is a dry heat!" Ya right! I had a little weather station there that was pretty useless. When ever it got really hot, I always showed a bunch of humidity. I finally figured out that it was NOT true humidity as much as artificial from every human watering during the heat. If I took my little portable hygrometer out of town, it was dry. Go figure! Bottom line is that it was WAY too hot for me.

In 1999, we moved here to Oregon for the weather. Love the rain. Don't mind the gray at all... I was amazed to find out that there was NOT nearly as much rain here as everyone thinks... Ya it rains all winter... but then we get two or three months of dry fire danger. Think about 6 months of moisture and all the green grass that then dries up in June/July... Yup, it burns!

Enough yapping from me... Bottom line is that I don't like the heat. Prefer it in the lower 70s. The heat pump in the house maintains about 66 degrees year round.

If someone here can invent an anti-fireplace I think we could use one when it gets hot here.

Jimmy:

I moved from Calgary to a little place about 28 miles NW of Tyler, Texas. It was 103F here yesterday and has been running this hot for about the last 10 days. Usually it isn't quite this hot until August.

I got a little too much heat yesterday as I was working on welding a friend's trailer and got signs of heat exhaustion so had to know off at 2:30. It was over 100 by then.

I usually go through 3 changes of clothes, drink a ton of water and usually try to get out of the heat for regular breaks. I have a fridge in the shop as well as an air-conditioner. It can't keep up though when it's over the 100 mark. Usually the shop runs about 5 to 8 degrees cooler than outside.

Today they are predicting between 105 and 110F.

On other thing is I have 15.5 acres with hay fields and an enclosed AIR CONDITIONED tractor......the only way to farm. Also have a small portable cooler to keep my water cold in it.

Given the choice, I'll take the heat down here vs the cold up in Canada. I hate the cold and the snow. Must be the signs of age.

Cheers from a Canadian Texan.

:D

Actually, there were five dogs in that pic, but one is all the way up front:eek:

Second favorite spot for the dogs out back when I take them for a hike in the summer, only problem is sometimes I can't get them to leave:D

They come up with some interesting phrases on shirts with that one:D

I was born on the border of New Brunswick, and made it through that record snowfall up in the Tug Hill area of upstate New York around '99. My wife spent most of her life in Vermont until we met in NC, and all I can say is both my wife and I agree with you per taking the heat compared to the cold. Then again, NC isn't no place for ski bums.

It helps to be in good shape when facing the heat - reasonable heart condition and not overweight.
