Good advice on the dirt. It's an eye sore, but nothing that I've ever had long term issues with. I just use a stiff brush to clean it off before painting.

Progress on the rock has been very slow. I work on it one day on the weekend, along with whatever else I have to do. The problem is that after handling each rock so many times, I'm sore the next day, and don't want to do it again. I'm just about done putting all the exterior rock on and then I'll start grouting it with mortar. That will be even worse.

Dad has been building the wood shed/storage building. It's 8 by 20 will a wall in the middle to separate the two spaces. Firewood will be stored in the right side with a screen door to allow air into the room. An exterior door will lead into the storage room, which will have a counter and cold water sink on one side and a wall of shelves on the other side.

Before I can rock the fireplace, I need to mantel installed so I can cut and fit the rock nice and tight. The mantel is a cedar log from a tree on the land. It's been sitting for over a year and ready to use. I cut it with a chainsaw to get the back and top semi flat. Now I'm rough sanding and cleaning it up. Next I'll work on getting the top nice and flat with my big belt sander and then work on sanding the front with a variety of sanders before staining, sealing and installing it.

Nice mantle. I wonder if the nice smelling cedar scent oils will be brought out by the heat of the fire below? Probably will for a couple years anyway.

I hear you Eddie. As a man in his fifties, I am really beginning to understand the joke "what's the difference between a man in his 20's and one in his 50's in terms of injuries" ... 6 months (recovery).

I finished all the exterior rock yesterday. I still have to rock the fireplace and I'm not sure if I have enough or how much I'll be short. It should be pretty quick once I get the mantel installed. Next step is to fill in around the rocks with mortar.
