Re: House II, Porch Footings

Why isn't the footing poured first?

That's what I wondered at first too, but in the end it really doesn't matter so I did my thing with the porch deck after the framers did the roof and the mason will come later to brick up under it all. I plumbed my framing to the ceiling framing so it all lines up. I set the deck framing on temporary supports and leveled it all up where I wanted it. We established our final grade line today so I dug the footings and marked for the concrete height from the deck framing. I'll have the mason build the piers an inch shy then lower the deck down for a little pitch away from the house. He'll know exactly where to put the piers since the framing is already there /w3tcompact/icons/clever.gif It could have gone the other way too with him taking his plumb lines from the roof framing as well so I guess it's just a matter of scheduling/convenience /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

And yes, I was having a huge blast with that backhoe /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

Re: House II, Porch Footings

MDNY, I've already got the CUT... now just to convince the wife that I NEED that backhoe attachment.

Of course it's not as simple as it sounds. Our builders rig is a tph mount and I'm pretty sure I don't want that after using his. My little 790's top link mount is nowhere near as solid looking as that 4200 and it sure seems like the tph backhoe puts a lot of stress on the top link. So now I have to convince the wife that I not only want a backhoe but I want a subframe model, and ideally the John Deere one that fits so nicely /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: House II, Porch Footings

RobS,

Thanks for the info. Well I stopped out tonight but didn't bring the camera figuring not much was happening. Wrong. The roofers have started. They did the garage, and by Wednesday/Thursday will have it all done. The windows are arriving tomorrow and they will start those as well. So I figure by Friday evening I will have my roof all shingled, the windows and doors (mostly) if not all done and ready to meet the electrician.

I will take pics tomorrow since I have golf league on Wednesday and can't stop out.

Re: House II, Porch Footings

Hey, no problem Michael. Your place is really looking nice. Amazing what a roof does, isn't it? It'll be good to have it weathered in.

I took some pictures last night but power was out at the rental so I couldn't upload them. The siding guys finished all the high gables and the lift goes back today. I did have a chance to play on it last night but no pictures of that /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Tonight we pour the concrete for the porch footings /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: House II, Porch Footings

RobS,

Well I ran into the roofers tonight as they were finishing for the day when I got there. Nice group. They will be done by Thursday with all the roofing. The windows got delivered today, but late so they didn't start them yet.

Not to be picky but I noticed a small ding in the frame molding on the front door and that irked me a bit the door is expensive enough to have damage on delivery.

Any way I figure roof done and window's underway and most likely done by early next week. I figure we will have siding going soon.

Our roof pitch is nothing like yours and our turrett is more decoration as we opted out of the vaulted ceiling (costs had to be cut somewhere).

Heres the latest pics.

Re: House II, Porch Footings

Looks great and they seem to be really flying on everything. Nice weather helps. We poured porch footings tonight and the mixer driver was reminiscing back to March when we did our wall pour. He said he was one of few who didn't get stuck that day.

Your porch entryway looks similar to ours with a gable over the steps. We're struggling a bit with the details on that and I need to get that put to bed here soon so the siders can do the soffits under there. Do you know how yours will be finished? Plane of the gable versus porch post locations? It's all kind of hard to visualize in my mind.

I'll stick some recent pictures under a new sub-thread /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: House II, Porch Footing Pour

Serious fun tonight as we poured the porch footings. My wife and I are doing most of the porch as our little contribution to the house. Here's our builder's husband (on the right) and I watching the concrete flow. I look like a real contractor there don't I /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: House II, Porch Footing Pour

And here's the most recent shot of the front. The siding guys finished the high peaks yesterday with the boom lift and it was picked up this morning. Now they're back to ladders and staging. It's so rough they didn't even work today. They are supposed to be back tomorrow and all done by the end of the week. Hard to tell but there is some decorative trim up in the tall gables. We struck a deal with a local manufacturer and got some free stuff in exchange for catalog photos. Still working with them on more porch details and some interior trim embelishments /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
