That's certainly the short version of your previous thread. It was hard to follow the path. Your place looks great.
After pouring the foundation footings and walls for the house, garage and shop the work has stopped for this week ( contactor's on vacation). He'll have the porta-potty hooked up to the shop septic system & water Monday or Tuesday. That will definitely be nice when I'm working there (I have to go back to the truck and drive a couple of miles to the local gas station now). I'll restart my construction thread when more visable progress is made. I'm still working on the perimeter fencing. Found an old roadbed that made it interesting to put posts in (brick, hard packed clay, asphalt, concrete, old phone lines, etc).

Hi John:

I'm guessing that you found all that old stuff buried, and dug it up while doing postholes? If so, and I don't mean this to sound wierd, but have you given any thought to "how it was" when that road was being used, and what kinds of conversations were being had by what kinds of people when those lines were up? Or how long ago and under what circumstances the road etc. were buried?

History fascinates me, and finding stuff like you found just gets me thinking. I hope you got through it without too much hassle.

One of my neighbors, who's lived there all his life, is working on the fence with me. His great grandfather used to own our land plus several thousand acres more. He talks about the road, the old houses (now gone) on our property, the stills in the 50's & 60's, etc. The previous owner who bought this place had the county move the road from his property to the edge of it (about 100 ft or so) when the county paved it 30 years ago. It used to run across our pond dam. Everywhere I dig I find stuff (including an old 50's school bus that was used as storage). We tried the post pounder on that fence line but it wouldn't work - snapped and splintered posts. We then dug with a 6 inch auger and tried the pounder again - had problems aligning the posts. Next is digging with a 12 inch auger and backfilling. Also had to use the backhoe in several places to dig out the debris.

Things are looking good on your house. I guess the builder and his crew took the holiday weekend off, but more Slient Floor I Joists were delivered for the second story. So hopefully on Monday things will be moving along again. Just ordered our new bedroom set (oh boy that cost) but it will be nice to have a complete set that is new to us. Too many years in apartments.

OK, so much for the condensed version. Now we're back to nitty gritty details. A little homeowner sweat equity as well.

One thing about our last house that always bugged me was the porch decking. First, it was decked with 5/4 deck boards which are a rather modern invention and secondly, the boards "go the wrong way". They ran parallel to the house. I said from the beginning, if we are going to build a new house I'm doing the porch myself to make sure it's done right. Actually, only the deck as we had the builder handle the porch roof for us.

I finished all the framing yesterday. It's structured so the boards will run perpendicular to the house (and fan out around the corners) and I'll be using 1X4 T&G for the decking. I'll wait a bit for that so it doesn't get trashed during construction.

... and here's the after shot. Both deck and roof are on temporary supports for a while yet. The next step should be a blast for us TBNers. We need to dig the footers for the piers.

Well, it turns out our builders own a JD4300 with a backhoe /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif We'll be digging footers in style! I'll use my tractor to move around the spoils.

Once we have the footers in and poured, the brick masons will return and brick right up to my framing. A cedar skirt board will cover the transition and then we can get rid of the temporary supports. Pretty slick /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Things are looking Goooood. With the dry weather and you will be moving in no time. We just ordered furniture the the Master Bedroom. But the delivery is about 8-10 weeks just in time for us to get ready for a move in Mid October. It is hard to think we will be moving in about 3 months, but things will be going fater now.

Ditto on the picture. I've done 45 degree cuts on t&g to turn corners but never tried to fan them. Seems like the progressive angle cuts to fan them would drive the average man to drink. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

OK, maybe the term "fanned" isn't quite accurate but in my sketch that's what it looks like. It's really just a mitered corner but the corner the porch wraps around isn't a 90 degree. It's a pair of 45s so the porch boards will be all cut at 22 1/2 and the effect between the two corners is something of a fanned out pattern. A bit deceiving though.

I haven't yet laid the boards so I can't take a picture of that. I'll try to remember to shoot the framing tomorrow evening.

An aside to all this...

Today was my wife's birthday. I sent her out to the new place this morning for a walk and to hunt for her birthday present. She called and found her porch swing on the porch which I moved early this morning and found a dog in the basement. She thought that was the present but it wasn't, just a stray. It took her another half hour to find the ceiling medallion I put up in the dining room. Still in the package and no drywall in there yet. I guess she just wasn't looking up. Anyway, I was out there this evening leaving a note for the siding guys and I sat down on the porch swing just as a couple of deer wandered up to the back corner of the property. Can't wait to move out there /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Now we have interior walls. This will take a few shots, and it is hard to see with all the temp braces until the second floor I Joists are in place. But it is more progress. Maybe I will be done before RobS is.

I am now taking the digital cam corder with me to start the movie taking portion and the still digital cam too for the basic shots. I know too many toys. I just can't wait for them to start framin the garage portion, just wonder when that will be. It kind of looks naked without the garage.

Ha! You can only say that 'cause you're in the fast phase now. Just wait, things will slow down just like they have for us.

Actually, not too bad at our end. Not much today though they did deliver the first load of siding and the siders should start tomorrow. I spoke with our builder tonight and she thinks the drywall finishers will start next week. Probably another 3-4 days of hanging sheetrock.

I spent this evening nailing joist hangers on the porch. Dull work, but something very satisfying about it /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

Somewhat less satisfying was fixing the kitchen sink drain in our rental house /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

You never know I could just catch up to you (not likely I agree). Fortunately for us the builder and his crew are moving along fast. I agree that it will slow down a bit. The second floor I Joists are in and they should do the decking tomorrow and maybe by the weekend have the second story exterior walls done. It took them one day to do the 2x4 interior first floor so about the same for the second floor. Maybe roof trusses next week. That will be ugly with a double hip roof, main gable, turrett integrated into the main double hip and a sloped porch with a small gable. Oh yeah the garage too has to be framed and a roof.

Finally! Just when I thought MDNY was going to be in his new house before us we got our first taste of the finished product tonight. Here is most of the garage sidewall with siding.

This was a momentous occasion for us as we took quite a risk with the colors. Not risky for a Queen Anne, but plenty risky for a modern rendition. The color is Ivy, kind of a mossy green. Not sure how well it will come across the internet. The trim is cream. The siding distributor said there is only one other house in the area with this color so we never had a chance to see more than a small sample. So far we're thrilled /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
