RPK,

You were not long winded, far from it. I always think the more details the better. I never heard of 1/2" Dow Blueboard. Also why did he go with 2 x 6 wall studs? Wht kind of insulation was used that he needed 2 x 6

rox,

1/2" Dow Blueboard I assume is just 1/2" styrofoam. It comes in 4x8 sheets and as has been mentioned, is often used over top of 7/16 osb for additional insulation as well as a vapor barrier.

That I know of, there's no insulation that requires 2x6 studs, but it is not uncommon for people to use 2x6 studs just for the additional insulation you can cram in that space. It's just another way to get a better insulated house.

dooleysm,
thx. We did have the styrofoam on our last house but it was pink. 2 x 6 seems to me to be an awfully big stud, course it really isn't 6' is it? Just like a 2 x 4 isn't really 2" x 4"

The last several houses I've lived in use 2x6 studs for exterior walls. I thought it was required if not for strength, for better insulation.

I used 2x6 when i built my house thicker insulation and more space behind electical boxes. Also used tyvek. Now why don't they print that stuff with a brick or siding on it instead of a big add?
There are many not finshed or sided garages here in maine that it would help the look of. LOL

In our area ( Southern New England) energy costs are high.

It cost my son $1000.00 for 100 sheets of 1/2" Dow board (styrofoam) to cover the exterior of his 32x38 two story Colonial. They built high on a hill which has a fair amout of wind. In January 2006 before we insulated the exterior walls, (2x6 with R-19 fiberglass) I checked out every nook and crany of the exterior walls of that house from the inside. The exterior was totally weather tight with vinyl siding. From the the inside on a very windy day there was absolutely no air movement or drafts.

Check out the Dow website it will explain how heat transfers through all the wood framing members on a heated structure.

2x6 exterior wall framing is only used to get more insulating value. You can build up tp three stories with 2x4's. 2x4 exterior wall studs with 1/2" styrofoam insulation over the sheathing is a great way to go also. I know for fact that my son's home is the only one in the area built with this wall system and it works great and was not that much more expensive.

A friend just built a outbuilding and used the Lowes wrap.. but he was told afterward (by whom I have no idea) that the Lowes was not as good as the Tyvek.. The lowes did not 'breathe' like the Tyvek does..

2x6 walls allow you to space your studs out to 24 inch centers. It's saves a little in material, allows you to use thicker insulation, but you also have to use thicker sheetrock. I don't know wich way is cheaper, but the higher R value is significant.
