How big is your garden and how many tomato plants?

David, my mother also used to make chow-chow relish. Like you, we loved it on pinto beans and cornbread. It's a whole lot different than sweet hotdog relish, much more spice and with a real zip.

Hey, I'm one of the old and infirm! Just kidding, I'm slightly over 60 and there are a lot of seniors down there in their high 80s. It's not a big deal to pick a peck or so of tomatoes, the senior center is right on the way into town and they all seem to appreciate it so much. Every time, several ask for a tomato before I make it back to the kitchen. When I come out, they're all sitting in their chairs with a paper towel and salt shaker, going to town! That's always a feel good minute.

We also have a new recipe for chow chow that uses yellow squash instead of green tomatoes. We tried it a couple of years ago and it is really good.

Only problem is it limits the fried squash I can get

The relish I grew up eating is like chow-chow but we call it picillili. Any store bought relish just doesn't work for me & this is a great use for green tomatoes when frost is coming at the end of the season.

Hooray...summer weather has finally come to the Northeast.
Amazingly its been only 4 short weeks since we had below freezing temperatures and snow.

My tomaters, eggplant, and peppers are growing fast now! Brussel sprouts are looking good too.

I've never grown Brussels sprouts. Surely you get more than one per plant. If you take one sprout, do they make another one?

EDIT: Never mind; I looked it up. It's interesting how they grow on the stalk. I was thinking of 1-plant = 1-head like cabbage.

we only planted 24 maters this year. down from 32 last year.

Do you harvest after the first hard frost? While searching, I found that they are the sweetest after a good frost.
