How can I build a road up this hill

If you I want to use the BX, shape the whole area for the utility of the land, slope for drainage, maybe a shed, garden etc. Even if not doing it this year just step back and think big.

I've found roughing a path to elevation and working downhill really help when using my BX...

Not sure if that is possible in your situation?

My path to the top was abandoned once it served it's purpose and built the all weather trail... even had my two wheel drive pickup up there when it was dry...

How do you eat an elephant... one bite at a time.

If you get fatigued or tired time to get off the tractor for the day... especially for us weekend operators on hillsides.

I’d start about the dip in the middle of the picture and start cutting down the hump on the top side effectively making the hill longer. You could put the dirt removed at the bottom side but I’d be in favor of not doing that because it’ll be more work to get graded and compacted. This doesn’t appear to be steep enough or tall enough to require a crossways cut road.

Another option would be to cut down the entire hill and reduce the angle of transition. It would be easier to mow if you cared about that and erosion would be less of a problem but that would be quite an earth moving project for the BX.

You can also cut into the hill side up near the top to make the angle less, and use that dirt to add to the ramp at the bottom.

Or cut it even farther back and never disturb the base soil at all. No fill. ;)

Yeah, i don't see any 'road building' to do here. Most of my property is steeper than that. I walk up and down a 15' change just between my front door and mailbox. Yard drops at least 10' from my back door to my shed. And it's all downhill from there. Literally. Bottom of the yard is 30' below the house.

Cut the ramp out a bit more. Dig the higher part out and move the fill to the lower part to decrease the grade. Try not to do it before it starts raining for a month or more so you don't have a great muddy mess you can't even walk on, like I did.

I live beside a fairly large creek. A few miles inland the creek bank slope is in some places steep. I have cut down the bank on several properties to create a more gentle slope for the owner to access the creek. I start at the top of the slope gradually cutting the bank down to a gentle slope. When done I recommend sodding the slope to hold the dirt in place. If you want it to be a road then I suggest tilling in a soil stabilizer. If you have a coal fired electric generating plant in the area then use the fly ash from the plant. Till it into the soil, pack and wet it. When dry you will have a hard surface base. I have done a couple of driveways this way. One supports a 50,000 lb 45 foot motor home.

As already stated: cut the top & fill the bottom. Work downhill. From the looks you are almost there.

Thanks, everyone.

Cutting at an angel would not be my first option as this is a continuation of a straight driveway coming from property entrance. I'd love to be able to drive in the gate and go straight line up the hill. The photo does not show how steep it is. I cannot even push a wheel burrow up this thing currently.

I had a gravel delivery guy here today and he recommended 28 yards of crushed asphalt, topped with 2" crushed rock.
What do you guys think about that?

I think he's trying to sell you gravel and delivery services.

I think you've had several people tell how we would do it though we only have the one picture to go by.

I tend to agree with the rock hauling guy. I have a similar situation and I used AB3 and worked it in with the weight of my tractor. That was 14 years ago. It's still there, hold just fine. Some grass has come up through the rock, but I don't care.
