How can I build a road up this hill

Other suggested this but as of now getting the tractor up there is impossible. Even if I winch it up there some how, it'll be stuck up there for a long time and I need it for other stuff on hte lower level.

Really, though? I don't get it; perhaps the picture is not telling the tale. But you should be able to put your machine in 4 LO, hit the diff lock, and just drive right up there. Or do the tires just spin? Don't be afraid, you're not gonna tip over backwards.

I agree with ZTMAN's suggestion on using a box blade, do you have one? Get your machine up to the top and drag the box blade down to carve in a trail. The first few times driving up might be an adventure, but I think you can make it.

It just wont do it. It'll go about half way and just cant make it the rest of the way. Yup I think the photo does not show the slope . Also I am afraid to do it.....I'll use a string to measure the angel today. Non stop rain for days here anyways....Once I make it up there, so many posibilities. There are several naturally level areas with mild slopes connecting them.

If you have an iPhone, it has a measure APP. There's a level in there. Just lay a 2x4 up a slope you want to measure, open the measure APP on the iPhone, select the level option, and hold the side of the phone against the 2x4. There's your angle. ;)

It's hard to get a good picture of a slope. They are usually steeper than the pic shows.

Usually it's best to dig an angle up the side if a slope, instead of straight up.

Usually I run out of HP before the tires spin. Appearantly, they do not make non-turf tires for the BX1880....Even if I find them, once my big projects are don, I'll be on turf most of the time.

Consider tire chains.

I rather unhappily discovered that there are a couple of places I can't get through with R4s even in Lo, 4WD and DiffLock. Some of my dirt when mixed with sufficient rain is just 'slicker'n snail snot' as the saying goes. I can't even walk up that spot on foot safely. Slipped and fell when trying to walk down it. The weight of the SCUT sinks into it and I just sit on it and spin. I have to back down out of it and try again at a different part of the hill.

This is an area I dug up and tilled this fall after grass growing season ended. I'm hoping to find a grass that will have a tough enough root system to solve that problem before next winter.

Should this even be possible? OP: Are you at full throttle, in 4WD, and in low speed?

I agree that something is wrong. Either it’s not in low range, the parking brake is on or something else is wrong.

Tire chains won't do him any good. He says he runs out power before the tires spin.

Good points. If it's an HST, maybe he's mashing the pedal instead of letting up on it to gain power?

For the steep hills, some times I have a need to back up the hill. Was on a couple of hills that the front tires started to spin, turned around, backed up, high rpm's , light on the pedal, no problem.

Been there. Done that. Didn't understand it. Still don't.

Back up pushing yourself with the bucket.

Pedal to the metal and it’s a stop.

Filling the bucket with dirt will help.

SeaMonster, now is when you chime back in here, and post pics of a nice trail heading right up the hill. :)

Really though, all you gotta do is get the machine up there once. Then excavate with your front loader and box blade from the top as far as you can, without getting stuck on the hill again. When you've done all you can from the top, try again from the bottom and hopefully your two sections are meeting up into a continuous trail.

Suggestions to help make it up the hill:
1) Get dug/filled as far as you can from the bottom. Back drag and smooth/compact this section out so that you can carry some speed on it.
2) Fill the front bucket with dirt, and have a heavy rear attachment on. The more weight the better.
3) HST in Mid range, max rpm, 4WD and diff lock. Get up to full speed on the flat and charge up into the hill. Back off the go-pedal when you feel the HST begin to protest or the engine bog at all. Or if your wheels start to spin much.
4) Open the beer you brought along with you and celebrate making it up.

.

Made it up today! Also moved forward into the flat area on the hill about 100 feet. Now I'm thinking I need my tyruck to be able to drive up there so I'm back to improving the ramp. I ahve loads of good size rocks on this property. I'm packing the sides of the ramp with them, then pouring clay soild on top. It is all getting compacted the first time I drive on it but I'll let it be rained on for the rest of this season before attmepting to drive my truck up there. Then I'm going to build a workshop awith some parking spots and tractor carport too. So exited to be up there!

Nice ramp! Looks like a beautiful day.

It is a good feeling to achieve a goal through persistence... I felt the same way at my brothers place when I told him I would build a trial to the highest point... he was on board but it was very low priority.

Now, when he has company they often take the RTV and head to top... access really is everything!

In time, you will get a better idea of what needs to be bolstered and how you can make little improvements over time... the first trail I did 25 years ago gets improved a little each year... would never recognize it today from it's humble beginning as a deer trail.

Good Going!

PS... pics remind me of Western Washington...

So was rain the only thing keeping you from getting up there? Did you discover anything you were doing wrong?
