I really wouldn't know. It looked just like a rod that had been bent, primed, and painted. Where it's the spindle that takes a lot of jarring and bumping, I would think that an engineer would opt for more spring and less hardening.

Also, I got the whole thing put back together and we were off by less than 4 degrees. Not bad for eyeballing it. It's completely functional now. All it needs is a bit of an alignment on the front end.

There are different degrees of hardening.

in any case.. letting it cool slowly makes it 'softer'.. vs quenching it for fast cooling.. temper wise.. etc.

You may never have another issue.. so i wouldn't worry about it..
