How do you dispose of your old hydraulic oil

I think I read on this site that someone's wife poured used hydraulic fluid into the fuel tank because her husband had put it in diesel fuel cans temporarily. The consensus was that this was not a problem ?

How about filtering it and running it in 10%/90% hydraulic/diesel fuel mix ?

I use it to start my burn piles. Just pour it out over the logs and let them burn.

I'm with you Eddie. I having been burning around a stump for a while now. I use a few quarts every time I am burning. Stump has a little hole in the middle, so now I pour a little down that.

When you guys burn your hydraulic oil don't you get a lot of thick black smoke? I burn a LOT of cardboard here but I would never get away with black smoke. Someone would call the Sheriff's post or worst the EPA.

Are there other good alternative uses for used "Fire Resistant Hydraulic Fluids"???

I'd expect that they would not burn very well.
Here are a few ideas listed in order of good to bad.
You can use a "shootz" (sp?) gun to spray the inside of your car doors as a rust preventer.
Waterproof that old tent in the garage.
Paint your picnic table and make it shiney again.

I "think" here in NY any place that changes oil has to accept used oil from people - and they can't require that you get your oil changed there.

In Delaware, one can take their oil in to Advance, Jiffy Lube or similar places to recycle. The only downside is having to wait for them (they walk back w/ you to dump the oil). Delaware has a recycling program with local dropoff locations for paper, cardboard, metal cans, plastic, etc. Some locations (not all) have a large collection tank or waste oil. I dispose of hydraulic and waste oil in the same container.

This occured to me as well. So far I havnt tried it. Anybody had experience?

My burn piles are pretty big. I burn full sized trees by the dozens, and it can get to be a pretty big fire. Hydraulic oil, engine oil and household garbage all pretty much disapear in my fires.

Yes, I have plenty of black smoke and it's very visable from the highway in front of my place and Interstate 20 half a mile away. When I'm burning, I can see the smoke from my place a mile away. Some of my fires have lasted for weeks!!!

Whenever I have a burn pile I just make sure I call county control before I light it. That way if someone calls the fire department they know it's a controled burn that is being monitored.

Eddie can't get away with that around here. I've had some pretty big fires when we were clearing our land but the smoke would be a problem for sure.
