How do you fuel your tractor (logistics, not finding the cap to the tank)?

If you are using your drill one day and slip, you might accidentally drill a hole in the handle of your new EPA approved gas can. Mine just happened to be exactly the size to snugly fit a golf tee. That golf tee falls out a lot, especially when I'm pouring fuel out of the can. It sure speeds up the process though and then I install the tee to keep dirt out and the EPA happy.;)

This cracked me up. Pure genius. :thumbsup:

Since I don't go through a lot of diesel with my JD 5225, I keep (4) yellow 5-gallon jugs filled as needed and store them under cover. I fill them up at a station 5 miles away. I'd rather have fresh fuel and travel more often than buy 100-gal at a time and have it sit around too long.

To fuel the JD, I move the full jugs a short distance from storage using a two-wheel cart. I lift the jug, stand on the tractor's 3-point-hitch lift arms (which are always attached to an immovable implement sitting on the ground), and pour it in. Sometimes I spill a little. A pump would be great to have, but it would have to be fast.

Anyone using dyed off road diesel? Its cheaper and readily available. I just haven't figured out where to store it yet.

I'd say it's a pretty safe guess that anyone (make that everyone) that has decent access to it would be using it. Why would you pay road tax if you don't have to? It stores exactly the same as highway diesel does. Perhaps I am missing something but what makes you think it would store any different?

I've tried a few hand pump siphon pumps with little success, and currently pour from a 5 gallon can. Precarious and painful. I'm going to try one of these. Thanks.

When I first hauled my tractor home I filled it with offroad fuel and bought a jug as well. But while it had no road tax, it had sales tax instead so that cut the benefit down a fair amount. Now to get the offroad on a regular basis I'd have to drive about 5 miles on a special trip. For a 5 gallon jug every couple months it just isn't worth it.

I guess "decent access" part of my comment would be somewhat subjective. To you, 5 miles out of the way is too much for what you use so that puts it outside of your definition of decent. Would I be correct to say that if the station that you usually use carried both coloured and clear you'd use coloured?

The closest station to me is 5.5 miles away if I would settle for clear. If I want coloured, it's 17 miles but happens to be across the road from where my wife and I go for breakfast most Saturdays so I try to plan my purchases -- or use it as an excuse for an extra day out for breakfast. I'm sure there are LOTS of folks here that would be thrilled to bits to have coloured only 5 miles away (including me) :cool2:

Ray;

In Texas Red diesel is tax free. Reduced for State and Federal taxes by $0.38 per gallon. No sales tax either. Found fuel ticket from 1992, when I got 300 gallon tank filled first time for $0.83 per gallon. Miss those days. Propane was way under a dollar a gallon also.

I use 300 gallon tanks. The one for tractor is on stand gravity empties it. The one for the generator is ground level and geny siphons it out on its own. Fill each at least once a year add diesel stabilizer and power service to it at fill up. Change geny filters yearly (about 40 hours/year) and have filter on overhead tank. No problems for me. And dyed diesel in Kentucky is tax free with a permit number. Dealer has paperwork and you mail to state get number in 6 weeks or so and good to go rest of life.

Farmer;

Texas requires a permit also since about 2010. You can fill out form online and receive permit in a couple of weeks.
