How do you sharpen you blades?

O.K. WISENHEIMERS !

I don't really understand this response. At the time 2 responses were grinders and one was doing it the same way you do. Those seem like reasonable responses to me, or are you reading more into the responses than I am?

Ramps! Man are you crazy......We don't want to see a Squashed gator!....Doesn't every one take their MMM deck off and then take blades off?

Uh, I don't think I'm crazy. I have ramps that are rated at 12,000 pounds, and I get under my vehicles to change oil using them, so why would driving your CUT on these ramps be anymore dangerous? I think ramps would be the most popular option.

Ramps WITH wheel chocks I hope.

I take the MMM off, grease it at the same time. clean it, check the wheels, etc, then put it back on...........UNLESS

It is close to service time, then I let the boys at the bota store do it............that way I dont get busted knuckles.

I am going to build a brace for my barn, that way I can use the winch I have, lift the front of the tractor, and pull the thing out from the front, instead of having to manuver it around the tires.

This post is cracking me up. From what I have read, everyone was looking for something different, either a fight, a joke, or information. Reminds me of that story about reaching through the fence, feeling the parts of the elephant and guessing what it is.

Anyway, for my two cents, I am sitting here still in awe that anyone would spend time every week sharpening blades on a mower. Of course, as I have posted before, Ferrari has an incredibly beautiful lawn while I have a dirt/mud field. Still, dedication like that is amazing. I'm lucky if I vacuum once a week and that is only under threat of dire consequences. Like having to become employed.

Ok, well this post hasn't added a whole lot to the discussion so it should fit in just fine. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thaks for the compliments on lawn, but it really looks bad in that picture....I understand that everyone does not want anything except something green in their lawn......But I love making it better and better....and like I said it is the little things that make the big improvements....I just got a new B-2910 with a 72" MMM about 10 days ago.....I have several very large trees down from a tornado about 2 weeks and have been cutting like a maniac to get it all up off of grass before it kill it......I have not had time to sharpen my new blades on tractor until yesterday.
Here is what I did....but I think everyone here already uses car ramps....
Put on steel car ramps
chock rear wheels
lock brake on
raise deck all the way
crawl under deck
struggle with darn bolts that were put on with impact tools !
remove blades
sharpen with bench grinder (more on this later)
reattach blades (I use 6 blades instead of 3) crossed at right angles for more lift
then unchock...etc....

Here again, I did not know that everyone already knew how to use car ramps! All other people I have run into took the whole deck of to sharpen blades.....

I will try to post pictures of newly sharpened blades later....You guys will not believe what a difference it makes in cutting quality when your blades are this sharp....I would not do it this often if it did not make a huge improvement !
I spent about an hour on each blade getting the angle down to about 20 degrees, this is called HOLLOW GRINDING ...and is what they do to knives....A good friend of mine owns FROST CUTLERY, and about 10 years ago I got to talk to one of Jim's metallurgests about how to do this....Yes they do dull quickly, but not if you don't run over small rocks or dust....I go to a lot of trouble to stay away from areas like this....and if you get your lawn thick and don't hit small things in lawn they do not chip.....

This thread is taking a similar tone as another by Ferrari on Tractorpointdotcom. On the "other" forum, I thought people were a little aggressive toward him. Here, it's more like, "Okay, this is how we do things on TBN."

In any event, I'm really eager to see some pics of those custom blades mounted on Ferrari's MMM. C'mon dude! Post 'em!

I guess I know why you're called "Ferrari." Ya post pretty darn quick! Anyway, I'm wondering how you keep the extra lifter blades mounted at 90 degrees to the main blades. Did you make a special bracket? Also, did you remove one or both of the spacer washers to cut at the same height? Inquiring minds want to know.

Hi
You said
I can talke all 6 blades off and sharpen them...and have them back on in less than one hour.
now you say
I spent about an hour on each blade getting the angle down to about 20 degrees

I'm confused now

Six blades? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

As far as those blade bolts go, I've found my electric impact gun most useful for removal and installation. No block of wood required!

These are New blades and I had to work each cutting surface down to a 20 degree angle for extra sharpness. After the first time it is much quicker....and I think it is going to take longer on the B2910 than it did on my B-8200....The blades are much heaver guage than on the B-8200....I had to slope back the cutting surface.....I use a whet stone and it takes a while.
I am having trouble getting pictures to load, but I have taken pictures of cutting angles and new blades after sharpening.....The 72" MMM came with 3 blades.......ordered 3 more sets of blades and they only sent me one set and they are not KUBOTA blades....My original blades are much thicker and have a K 302 on them and I am sure they are REAL KUBOTA blades....but the replacement blades have a long 10 digit number on them and are nor Kubota blades...they are of much smaller guage steel and the cutting edge does not protrude out in front like the original blades.....I want to find about 3 sets of real Kubota blades not after market ones....Does anyone know where I can get real Kubota blades...I don't want these replacement ones.....I have tried several Kubota dealers on-line and they are all telling me the same storey....but I think they are selling after market blades instead of real Kubota blades to make more profit....nothting wrong with that....but I want the thicker ones or I am going to have a balance problems with the difference in weight....

Ferrari,

I think the neat thing about the picture of your lawn is that it doesn't look that high. Looks like any nice lawn. But, if you look close at the tires on the B2910, you realize that a lot of tread is not visible because of the height of the lawn.

I keep wondering what it must feel like to walk through that. I don't know if Tennessee is anything like Texas. If so, then I would never walk through the lawn barefoot because of all the monsters that live there. If Tenn is more hospitable then I would probably spend a lot of time with my boots off, a cold one in my hand, watching the girls play on the lawn and myself just walking through that tall thick grass wondering how life could get any better.
