How do you store your attachments

I've heard that lumber prices are at a 5 year low. I have no idea what that means in terms of prices at the local lumber yard or Home Depot. I'm afraid the high price of anything metal is going to make the price of the roof offset any lumber savings though.

I really want to get this done. Very simple. Open sides. Metal roof. Three bays, 10 feet wide and 20 feet deep. 6x4 posts straight in the clay. 12' high in the front, 8-10' in the rear. How hard can it be? (Don't answer that, if I actually knew how hard it would be I'd never start!)

Shed with concrete floor helps a lot. Added casters from Northern Tool to pallets for more efficient space utilization and ease of hookup. That's especially helpful for rotary cutter hookup. What doesn't fit in shed is outside on pallets. Brainstorming a rack system for lighter stuff like sprayer and spreader, but not there yet.

Measure it with a micrometer, mark it with chalk, cut it with a torch, beat to fit, paint to match, inspect it with a microscope.
the definition of "close enough for gov't work":(;)

Kycontrol -- under a leantop attached to the barn .. can you add a leanto to yours? keeps the weather off 'em at least.

There is the issue of resale some time out in the future. Things stored inside have less problems than those left out in the elements. With a little thinking you can put a lot of stuff in limited space.
This is what I have PACKED into my 28 x 65' quonset:
4 Star two horse trailer with dressing room etc.
17' Lund boat/motor/trailer
Bush Hog 6' box scraper
Befco 6' tiller
Woods 6' rotory cutter
3ph post hole driller
Roda 50 bushel mini manure spreader
Kubota MX5000 with LA852 FEL
Cub Cadet riding mower
Craftsman GT5000 riding mower (junk - never buy this garbadge)
Polaris Sportsman 500 ATV with snow plow
Rodenator Pro (gopher killer) system set up on a craftsman lawn trailer
Radial arm saw
Reloading bench with all the goodies
All maner of power/hand tools
Ford F150
VW Jetta
This still leaves a 12 x 28 shop area with troybuilt garden tiller, shovels, rakes, hoes, pickaxe, Two Dog travel kennels, Three bicycles, Snow skis, snow shoes, a good supply of lumber, portable air conditioners....
This is insane! I need to build another barn. :p

Combination of pallets and furniture dollies for me. I built a big shelf (4 feet deep and 11 feet wide) against the rear of my pole barn to set seasonal stuff like the snow blade and blower on. Then, the other stuff such as rotary cutter and box blade parks underneath the shelf. The stuff on furniture dollies, like rear blade, loader bucket, etc., is in the shop with a concrete floor.

Haven't got a dollie made up yet for the backhoe, but it's on my short list of things to do. Backhoes take up a LOT of storage space and aren't easy to move.

I have a 30x40 pole barn that holds most of my things for now. I will probably need to expand or move some things out as I buy more stuff. I am thinking my rear blade could sit out and my flat bed trailer. That would free up a lot of space.Currently there stored in there is

John deere 755
Craftsman lawn tractor
1 bottom plow
1 row planter
femco sprayer
rear blade
Caroni tiller
4 ft bush hog
dump cart
push mower
16 ft flat bed trailer
pickup truck
sons atv
table saw
mmm
lawn sweeper
hand tools
welder
drill press
air compresser
lawn furniture

I may start putting a few things in the 2 and half car garage that my wife parks in there is room for a few things in there. I would park my truck in there but who ever built it put in a 6 ft high door and my truck will not go through it. I do believe that things last longer when inside. I will try to keep my planter, plow, and any pto driven implements inside if possible.

Everything inside except the 2 bottom plow. Everything on casters to make moving around and hookup easy, except the tractor, because it already has wheels.

Outside, just spray a little oil on them couple of times a year.

The tractor, spreader and tiller are under a shed, the rest I have on blocks outside

Everything is inside now... tractors and some implements in garage, implements in the large bank barn and implements in a large machine shed.

I like the swiveling jack stand on the blade. That is much easier than fooling around with a portable, adjustable type.

I have built a couple of lean2's for other people over ther last few years. One on the side of a garage, 30' long ,12' out,12' high.Another one was completely free standing. A very $ efficient way to keep thing out of the weather, in my opinion. Some day Ill have one , cept mine wiil have crushed gravel on the floor, and 6' cedar fencing on 3 sides. Perfect place to store all those implements and yard junk.

I like the idea of casters, but when I looked at the Northern Tool site they had about 300 different types. What would be the least expensive to attach to pallets that would work for attachments in the 1000 lb range? Also, what are the benefits of pneumatic casters? They seem to run a bit higher but not sure what they do.

Thanks

For the PHD, I have a little gantry with chain hoist suspended from steel pipe in the trusses. PHD rolls to wall and locks in place in garage. Other implements are all on custom built dollies with tractor in 3rd bay of garage. At implement change time, the 2 cars go out and implements roll right up to 3ph for perfect allignment and docking.

This post has links to my MMM dolly:

This post has links to my chipper dolly. It is a bit more specialized than a palate or furniture dolly:

http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/attachments/92701-dolly-3-point-hitch-dr.html

I am currently building a fairly specialized backhoe dolly.

The dolly for the rear blade has a vertical support post which holds the arm at correct height for 3ph attachment, but when time to store the rear blade, I hoist it with an electric hoist in the center of the garage trusses, roll the brush hog (on its dolly) under the rear blade, and set the RB piggyback on the brush hog. The brush hog then is rolled to its spot in the garage and the dolly for the rear blade is just set atop the stack. My carry all has casters bolted to bottom arms so it then rolls right under the brush hog so that these three things are tripple stacked.

Instead of buying a sprayer with frame and wheels, I bought a sprayer from Northern that is designed to bungee to rear of ATV. I put carry all on 3ph and bungee sprayer to that. The tank without frame is light enough to lift and set on a shelf in garage. You can see it in first photo of chipper. My garage trusses are higher than typical; I was able to put a truss hanger/hook up and vertically suspend my tow behind spreader by its hitch from the truss hanger hook.

N. H. Northern Tool and Supply and Grainger Industrial both have hundreds of casters available online, far more than they show in their regular catalogs. As I am editing this post, I see wushaw's post below this one. I actually found some 1000 # casters at one of those 2 places for not too high of a price.

If your wanting 1000 lb rated each casters then your gonna spend some money. But if your wanting to have a total capacity of 1000lbs then 250-300lb rated casters will work.
Pneumatic casters are good for rough surfaces but like any tire will loose air over time.
