Tractor
Deere 5065e MFWD
I am buying my 1st tractor, JD 5065e. I will keep it covered from sun and rain in a shed building - no sides but no sun or rain contact. Without it being in an enclosed , air tight building it will be subject to condensation as humidity and temperatures change. Will that degrade tractor through possible rust or corrosion of electrical connections? I appreciate any experience.

Its a machine, Its made for it. Don't worry.

The tractor will definatly last longer and have less long term problems if you keep it covered. Of coarse a bar would be best, but a roof over it's head will help tremendously. What you don't want is one of those canvis tents with 4 sides clear down to the ground. Those will trap humidity and cause watter issues.

My tractor spent the first 10 years of it's life outside before I bought it. It would have less minor issues if it was kept i a barn, but it still works fine and I keep it in a 2 sided shed now till I get my barn build next spring.

I keep hoping I will find a bar close by that I can drive my Kubota right up tp the stool!:D

That is how most equipment is stored if it even gets a roof. Sure a temperature controlled, fully enclosed building is better, but it is going to take a whole lot of years to see any degradation if it is kept out of the rain and direct sunlight.

LOL, I use the front end loader to haul away all my empty beer cans.

I have seen a few things in my days... but I have never, ever seen anyone seal their tractor up in an air-tight container. Do they even make Tupperware that big?

For those that wash and wax their tractors, it slows the deterioration of the wax and shine.

My former JD tractor spent 25 years without or rarely leaving a giant turkey barn. It was in almost new shape. I kept it in a open shed and it looked almost new until the day I sold it. My brother had a similar JD tractor of the same vintage usually kept outside. Both ran. His, tho, had lots of runs, no original paint to speak of, and looked really old.

As noted, keeping the sun off the tires during storage is very important as well to keep them from rotting.

Other than the sun, my main concern is mice. I put out poison all winter in my barn.

Yep. My biggest concern would be mice chewing wiring.

I don't know anything about this but thought modern wiring was somehow immune to mice? Do mice still chew modern wiring?

There recently was a post on the John Deere forum of a newer tractor that caught fire. It was determined that mice had chewed through the wiring and a short occured which led to the fire.

I know mice chewed some wireing on my 4 wheeler a year ago. Just a couple weeks ago it caught on fire. Not sure the two were linked, but I gess I need even MORE mouse poisen.

The tractor should be fine sheltered in that open air shed for years we've stored our motorized equipment in 2 out door lean-to's to free up garage space.

A couple 3 times over the winter mothballs will be spread out in the engine compartment, under and around the equipment to discourage mice. No problems with mice if you use mothballs.

Up here with out door equipment static for so long, it becomes a welcome retreat for varmints...now our garaged CC plow tractor and Kubota firewood tractor that's used off and on through the winter the mice have always left alone.
