How long of a driveway is too long?

Just about done with concrete drive, 700', 10' wide, 5.75 thick. I'll be glad when it is done.

I agree. The best neighbour I ever had lived four and a half miles away. That was Australia where several miles of driveway is common. We were only about a quarter mile off a dirt road (moved there from a half mile in Britain) but I recall one kid in Queensland being given a driving licence aged about 12 or something. Their drive was 17 miles and then another couple on a public road to meet up with the school bus. He was allowed only to cover that route. Saved his parents a lot of time.

Our present 300+metres is about the closest we have been. Tarmac to the door, due to a previous owner taking that as part of a road widening scheme. No maintenance in 13 years is a bonus for me.

Going to bump this back up as it's most likely coming to fruition soon. Will need to get quotes and surveying done this winter, but it looks like it's going to happen. Will start a build thread if/when that happens.

I still have my mile long gravel driveway. Length has not varied one iota in the 35+ years. I use to walk out every day to get the mail - now its on an ATV.

buckeyefarmer - now THAT is what I would call a country lane. Very pretty - interesting to maintain if you get snow.

Theres a creek on the left as you go down the valley. When you meet someone, one has to back to a pullout.
The other direction is a hill, with a turn half way up, that is a challenge in the winter. Many a times in snow i couldn't make it up, parked at the bottom and walked the other 1/2 mile to the house.
In the big snow of 1978, we used our crawler dozer to open the road. We would report our hours of road work and get paid only for our time, not equipment nor fuel.
