I would also like to recommend the propane weed burner torches to light all of these fires. The torch puts out mucho heat and will start diesel and full size firewood without much effort or time.

Highbeam... not quite sure what you are talking about? Can you elaborate or show me an example?
Have you considered offering the wood to someone who would cut it up for firewood? There's usually a guy who sells firewood who'd love to help you out. This is especially true if you're near a populated area or a camping area.
Bill, that's the one. I got mine at the home depot and it works great.
Who would buy a pile of slash? The big stuff could maybe be cut out of the tangle but it would be a lot of work and take a lot of time. Ever thought about who is liable if that firewood cutter whacks his leg off? Not worth it for me.
The pile in the picture I posted is now 100% ash. It went up this weekend with a halfhearted attempt using only the weedburner on a low setting. I could hardly get the grass mowed quickly enough around the pile. The pile had dried since February and the wood was very easy to start. Even the stumps cooked out. So I spent 30 seconds lighting a pile that I wasted four hours and 7 gallons of diesel on only 5 months ago.
The longer you wait to burn it, the cleaner, hotter, and faster it burns.

I did have a friend that took my oaks for firewood. I had about 5 smaller one and one monster. He did it all himself in 2 days. I had several big straight pines, but nobody wanted them unless you have a BUNCH!
Those units look very handy. They are cheaper than I would have thought as well. I wouldn't need one but every now and then so me and my brother in law are thinking about splitting the cost and we can both use it whenever we need.
They sure look like more fun than weedeating. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I have a neighbor who always burns his river banks rather than weed eat them. I've never been around when he's done it, I just see the after effects. I'll bet he's using one of those propane torch kits. I'll have to get a first hand look at them next time I'm in Home Depot or Lowes.
I always learn something here on TBN. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
They are great for starting fires. There is another application for these torches, they work great on hornets nests. Just before dark when they are not to active you just fire it up and hold it at the nest opening. The nest burns and any that come out of the nest have their wings destroyed in a second. At the end the nest is burned and all the hornets lay in a pile on the ground and can't fly.
Better wait at least 6 months. Sweetgum are notoriously hard to burn. If they are any size you'll need lots of pine mixed in the pile. The larger the pile, the better, but you'll usually still have charred 18" andd bigger gum logs left even after pushing piles up with loader.
Our local vet found out the hard way about burning such things. He threw a couple of old creosote fence posts on a burn pile and the black smoke brought out the environmentalists and fire dept.
Fire dept put out the fire and he got a ticket from the state. What a mess that was.
Not sure if they are available there but the rental yards around here carry a gas powered fan that you aim at the fire and cut your burn time down significantly.
Probably the only way you can get dry wood on Whidbey. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Watched a guy in Fla do something like that, except he used an airboat (BIG fan). /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
His burn pile was reduced to nothing in no time. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
