How many amps should a starter draw? JD 155c mower

Hi Folks,

I am working on my neighbors JD 155c. It has a short that is blowing the 20 amp fuse.
I can track that down.

The question I have is when bench testing the starter it draws 24 amps. Under load it draws 103 amps.

This seems high to me. Does it sound like the starter is getting bad too?

Book says max no load is 35 amps and max load is 180 amps. Sounds like your numbers are good. Does it crank over fast enough?

Thanks, I don't have any manuals for it.
Seems to. I cleaned and lubed the bushings. That helped lower the amps.

If you want to the starter motor to make 1Kw to crank a motor. The current will have to be 1000W / 10V / 66% efficiency = 150amps.
