Back when I was turning wrenches on air cooled aircraft engines, we were taught a gas, air cooled engine life with NO filter was 1500-2000 TBO. (Time Between Overhaul).
The recommended oil drain interval for a 65 hp gas air cooled engine was 25 hrs (just like a Kohler) and 50 hr drain interval for an air cooled gas engine WITH a filter system.
I expect the small garden tractors to be similar.
Here are the keys to long engine life:
Regular oil drain intervals,
Reg maintenance, correct spark plug, carb adjusted, etc
Clean cooling fins, and cooling sheet metal in place
good head gasket,
proper oil level.
I use synthetic on all my small engines. They work hard, they deserve synthetics!
jsut my $0.02 worth.
