We have 4-

John Deere 455 (L&G)-just over 1500
Ford 1620-1150
Ford 1520-910
New Holland TC30-350

Not too sure on others, but I have seen many JD L&G go up and over 5000 without the major problems like motor/tranny replacement.

The people at our local Kubota/NH(used to be Ford) dealer, said that the trannies used in our size tractor made by NH/Ford with hydro, usually go out at 1500 or so. And this was the dealer that said it, so it's either true or over the limit.

Father in law bought a MF1655 (Snapper) in 1978 with HST, 54"mmm and 48" tiller and ,it does have High and Low range , it is still going strong .
Has plowed snow in 4 driveways and church parking up till about 5 years ago. Shoved tons of dirt for our house ,his sons home, I'm guessing at least 30 to 40 tractor and trailer loads of dirt. Used the 48" rototiller every year to do up 3 large gardens till 3 years ago. One day we used his tiller for 6-8 hrs doing out some dirt at our daughters home ,before I had our FEL and BH. Mowed 3 acres 1 to 2 times a week over the past 31 years and for several years mowed another 3 acres.
Mower deck been redone once and top spindles aren't the best but still going .
HST still going strong , steering spindles the worst for wear but he still using his MF1655. Just wish I had some idea of how many hrs on his tractor ?
I've got 238hrs on my 2305 in 2 yrs 3 mo. and I been doing the things now with my 2305 that we had always used his for. Guessing even 100hrs a yr for 31 yrs

3100 hrs on HST MF Guessing !!!!!!!!!

MF 1523 - 198 hours when traded. Not a problem, just needed a cab, and something a little bigger.

Who makes the MF hydro units??

1969 IH624 - 8560 hrs ... original "agriomatic" - one of the first generation "HST" made by International in Germany

Now that's the kind of reply I like to see here. Not the ... I've got 386 hours on my hydro. Let's be real!

You gotta remember that most folks on TBN have CUTs, which most likely means homeowner/hobby, and we are lucky to average an hour of week in seat time.

On the larger equipment like a dozer do they use a swash plate type transmission? If not what design is it? Just curious. How come you had your HST apart.

I have never seen inside the new big equipment with HSTs, so I do not
know how they "scale up" for the additional output.

I was looking at a Vickers HST the other day (out of a Bobcat 743) and
it was amazing how similar the pump side was to my JD's Eaton unit. That's
when I remembered the cos had merged. There must be 100,000 Bobcats
out there with Vickers units.

I have only rebuilt 2 CUT HSTs, but it has been a learning experience for
me....that's why I did it. My B21 was first....see link below if interested.

My best HST user experience is the HST+ on Kubota's new Grand Ls. Kubota
is now putting TWO HSTs in their excavators, according to a Kubota engineer
I met.

Kubota B1550. Had 3000 on the clock when I got it and I've added about 200. Its tired but its still going OK. And I doubt the hydro screen had ever been cleaned til I got it. It was almost totally clogged. Cleaning the screen made a huge difference.

ah you guys are light weights. We've seen Kubota HST's over 10,000 hours.

Yeah thats very possible, and I bet you have seen them fail before 10,000 hours too. You are a DEALER right?

The HST transmission in my New Holland/Shibaura TC45D is made by Kayaba Industry Co. Ltd. of Japan, aka KYB. I am approaching 1600 hr with no transmission issues. Here is a link to the KYB website:

We've seen Kubota HST's over 10,000 hours.

On those tractors with more than 10K hrs....were they on their original
engines? Or at least one rebuild?

Guess I'll add my two cents worth in here.I had bought a MF 1655 mmm54" tiller MF 4850 and a 48" snowblower.I bought it at a Auction sale with no idea how many hrs as it didn't have a hr meter. The hydro was leaking oil from every seal plus it was almost impossible to find netural.Took it apart and put in all new seals plus had to put in a 1/8" roll pin onto a shaft that was how netural was found.Year later the onan engine bit the dust and I repowered it with a 20hp honda.I installed a hr meter at that time. Before going any further I'll tell you that the tiller tines were worn right down had to replace almost everyone, and the mower deck needed lots in order to make it work.Someone had actually cut the blades shorter and put v belts and pulleys in place of the timing belts and drive pulleys as well the u joints where just running in the yokes without any of the caps left.So you can imagine how many hrs must have been on this tractor prior to me buying it.Now back to where I put the hr meter in I now have 1950 hrs on it and its still going strong. So to tell you how many hrs on it I can't even guess But I do know the hydro in that1655 is a Sund Strand Hydro. This summer bought a MF gc2300 with hydro problems had 260 hrs showing but it had actually 1260 hrs, I've posted this in the Massey Forum under GC 2300 hydrostatic failure There was a failure in one of the cradle brgs where it had broke in half which caused the hydro to want to lock up and the foot pedal to jamb.It also scored one of the pump plates st well. Now I can't really say if this could be classed as a hyro failure or a failure caused by linkage adjust not having been set up right. The gc2300 hyro unit is a Eaton.I didn't do this one myself I had taken it into a hyrostatic repair shop and had them fix it for me.After putting it all back into the tractor is when I found out that the linkage wasn't set up properly unless by me taking it apart things just went back together differently then what it was like before I put it back together.I followed the book to set things up and thats when I found out about that if the linkage wasn't set up like this that it could possibly damage the hydro unit so why it failed I can't really say either as I just bought this tractor and found the problem shortly after I started using it.Its a 2007 tractor so hopefully it'll never have to come apart again as long as I own it. Sorry about the long post.Larry

What hours do you tend to see problems on the Kubota HST?

That totally depends on service. We had one in last year where the guy never changed the transmssion fluid. It did not fail till 1600 hours. Its pretty rare to see an HST fail on its own, usually when there is trouble with one its because another part failed and took the HST with it. Modern hydrostatics are really very trouble free.

The undocumented version indicates frequent high repair costs?:confused::confused:

Did warranty cover that??

You gotta remember that most folks on TBN have CUTs, which most likely means homeowner/hobby, and we are lucky to average an hour of week in seat time.

I understand that and I too am a home owner/hobbyist. Having said that I really don't think 20 people saying they have 361 hours on their hydro is really information that contributes to the value of this post. Now if someone says they have a brand/model and the hydro failed at 361 hour then that is news worth hearing. That says the hydro may not be a good choice of drive systems. If someone says their CUT is still roaring on with lots of hours (lets say 2000 hours) on it that tells us the hydro is a great system and we can expect to get at least get 2000 hours out of our investment. I traded my Kubota BX in at 1200 hours and had no HST issues.

An hour a week? Wow! That's gotta be tough!

I've often wondered why hydro's were not more successful in ag tractors as it works on constuction machinery and most combines can go their whole practical life of 4-5000hrs without hydro trouble and many beyond that..!!

D7E I have a question for you. Do combines have speed ranges or do they travel at one constant speed? I know nothing about combines and was just curious about what type hydro units they use?
