How much do you think this stump weighs?

My guess is 7000 pounds and a lot of it is dirt. If you can knock the dirt off or power wash it off, that will make a big difference.

I think that is too high. I agree the dirt is adding significant weight but I'd imagine something closer to 2500-3000 lbs as is. I can lift stumps about that big at least a couple of feet once I let the dirt dry out and roll it around a bit. My loader maxs out at 2700lbs to full height at the pivot pins so I'd think it would be a ton or so once a good portion of the dirt is washed off.

Maybe we can put it on the bathroom scale once it's out. :) You are probably right, but I had a stump about that size and my high lift jack (7000 pound rating), could barely lift one side.

It might be hard to read the scale because the thing is so wide. I'd think a nice fishscale (or whale scale) hung from the FEL would work better.:D

This one is not quite as big and the dirt has been cleaned off by a season of rain etc but it was not at all hard to lift and move.

You might be surprized at the difference the species of tree will make, too. If that stump was Sassafras, it might weigh X pounds, but the same thing in Hickory or Locust would be about 3X pounds or more.

Very good point. The stump I lifted was certainly not oak, hickory etc but rather some species of weed tree we call "choke cherry".

I'll bet about 1500 lbs stumps and dirt. Have you had it completely clear of ground yet? I'll also bet that there are some roots still attached. The backhoe should have no trouble pulling it loose and pulling it out of the hole.

BTW. that is actually not a very large stump as syumps go. Just look at the trunk caliper.

The stump probably doesn't weigh much but the dirt on it must weigh a lot.

I'll bet you dulled out a lot of chainsaw chains cutting in all that dirt.
