How much Hp to power a 5ft. brush hog?

with a 204 I would probably stick with the 4' hog, unless I was exclusively cutting small brushy weeds, with little grass cutting and heavy brush cutting. it woul probably run the 5'hog but albeit at a much slower pace and with more excitement when you encounter problems...

cranking up the mower is also a pretty good load on the machine and gettin gmy 6' going is usually a case in lowering the rpm, and slowly letting the clutch out 3~4 times to get the blades to spin out then bringing it up to 540. when the blades want to cross and or not spin out it can nearly shake ya off the seat. that is something that is no good for ya and worse can break something on the tractor. so far it has worked GOOD but not great as I have a lot of heavy grasses to cut. that means I can't take a full swath or must slow down, I on occasion need to do both to prevent over heating as grass is HARD to cut even when the blades are sharp. it tends to wrap/twist around the blades and fall over and clump up bad... woody weeds will simply be chewed up.. this year I will get my finish mower out more, (didn't use it 1 time last year and my yard shows it I have 4~5 acres of "grass" most of it is farm type grass only an acre or so of residential type grass but now I have re-done more yard into residential type lawn around the barn and parking areas. this mean more rider mower mowing and less brush hog/finish mower time.

Thanks Spiker, that's the kind of input I was looking for. My terrian is made up of trees sprouting all over the place. Got some grass too and I have a pretty good feeling my tractor would handle a 5 footer, but once you have it your going to use it, right? I'd probably be less likely to abuse a smaller mower. When the time comes I'll go for the 4 foot version.
