Lower gpm just means the augur turns slower . A post hole digger is dangerous enough at the best of times. The higher the rpms, the faster a minor problem becomes a major problem.
Now if the hydraulic pressure is too low, the augur motor will make less torque and would be more likely to stall on a minor obstruction.

Good to know if I decide to replace my 3ph.

GPM = speed

Pressure = torque (or cylinder power)

Right?

My tractor flows up to 13gpm, never had it above 1/2 throttle to dig holes.
100gpm doesn't mean anything if the pressure has a maximum of 500psi. It is hydraulic pressure that forces the augur through the root or lifts a stone.

Thanks!

so the plot thickens
...i talked to another fellow that runs tons of rentals, and has lots of experience with both the hydro and pto diggers and he said the 3 point setup will be more stable on my tractor than the hydro on the loader. He said with a decent auger, once they bite it does not need downpressure for the most part. With a skid steer that weighs more than twice my tractor and has a sturdier front end loader this is different. So i am back to waiting to rent one for about 100 bucks for a day, when the ground thaws, and see if that is what i what i want to buy and i will go from there.
He said they won't even rent out the hydro FEL ones to someone who is going to use them on a tractor anymore, for this reason. His opinion was also that breaking a pin is better than stalling the tractor, for what that is worth.

Really............................it is not all that complicated.

I am still waffling on this, the more i read, i think they both will work fine, they just have different pro-cons...
At this point i'll do hydro if i can find one used in good condition, and the tractor can swing it. There is a used belltech 150 i am looking at...
What is holding me up now is that when i look at the specs for my L4310, the steering flow is 4.1. Do i subtract that from my 7.8? Will that matter? Thanks again!

Probably not. Will you be steering at the same time that you're digging?

No, but i do not have enough understanding of how the steering is set up to know that it won't have a parasitic effect, even when static. I never really dealt with much hydraulics before this, aside from brakes and automatic transmissions. I never have had any of my stuff new enough to have power steering fail, and those all did not share their fluid with anything. I need to get an FSM, so i am not as ignorant... That said i cannot imagine it stealing that many gallons of flow while static, but i do not know how much the lines hold for it, etc, and so on...

I have the Landpride SA 20 mounted on the loader. Our tractors are similar in size and my SA 20 has the 6 to 15 gpm motor. I run a 12" auger and have been pleased with the unit so far. We have a mix of clay and sandy loam soil. It doesnt spin fast enough to clean out the holes in the sandy loam, but works well in clay. Down pressure is great as is the option to reverse. The slower bit speed also helps with overall control. I use the offset mount for better visibility. Last I run the hydraulics through a WR Long 3rd function kit.

Do you have any issues with your 3rd function kit overheating with the continuous use?

This is a great question. My lines get pretty hot while running my chipper feed hard, leaving it on.
