^^^ What Eddie said in post #15

If all these holes aren't to go in within days, I'd rent a 3 PH auger and learn from that. IMO it's little different than buying a cheap semi-beater used tractor at first to learn what'll suit one's work before going all out for new, warranty, cab, heat, AC, Backhoe, MMM, Bose sound ....

I urge keeping it simple and investing less, mostly because like buying a trencher it will likely run out of work and might cost more 'net' to resell vs having rented. (re-selling % loss is often proportional to init cost, so $500 or $1500 goin' in?)

Just putting ideas out there, so ... ^^^ what B&D said, too. :)

Buick,
Actually your answer could be stated differently, in that it is torque that drives the hyd motor, torque = flow (GPM) x pressure x 36.77 / rpm's. Pressure w/o flow, kinda worthless.....

Country, agree down pressure over rated but my bits will just bounce on a small rock. In perfect soil w/ no rocks, bit should perform. Still searching for soil w/o rocks and hard pan clay.

As Eddie has stated, down pressure is nice for a few things, but the BIT is what makes all the difference with a post digger.

Thanks everyone for the continued input.

Sounds like i should do as i mentioned maybe doing in my last post before buying anything, and rent the 3 point post hole digger. It will most likely be a PD25 or PD35. And try to gather some first hand info from that to make a more informed decision specific to my "soil".

One of the issues with getting a hydro unit for the loader, and running it off the existing lines and tractors 7.8 pump, and later going with a bigger pump off the pto if that fails to meet conditions, is that gpm won't be ideally matched. If i want to go big, i need to go big on both ends, right?

" The SA20 features 3 motor options to accommodate hydraulic flow systems ranging from 6 to 30 GPM. The SA20 is designed to deliver up to 2621 ft-lbs of torque to meet the heavy duty needs..."

"Hydraulic motor options & weights
6-15 gpm @ 1500 to 3500 psi (71 lbs)
10-20 gpm @ 1500 to 3500 psi (71 lbs)
15-30 gpm @ 1500 to 3500 psi (71 lbs)"
I am not sure what the torque ratings are for those though.

...all that given, that setup, the planetary sa20 is more than getting the non planetary hd25 or hd35 and mounting it to a quick attach frame. I should note it looks like the PD and HD are the same drives, but with either a hydro motor or driven off the pto. Not sure which would have more torque, the tractor is rated at 37.5 HP, at 540 rpm that should have 364.72 ft lbs or torque... I do not have enough figures (rpm, psi) to find the torque from the tractors hydro. I do not know the reduction in the gearset of the drive either.

Here is the pdf for those, https://www.landpride.com/ari/attach/lp/public/manuals/317-048p.pdf

It seems like land pride uses the pengo bit, and heads, from what i can tell, not sure who makes the drives.

So as not to confuse anyone, i keep mentioning Land Pride, because that is what is available closest to me locally.

Bumpkin, you will find a pic of the rock head from pengo you mentioned in those PDF links. Does that look like the same bit and head you are using?

Given the same power, if the rpms are reduced then torque is increased. There ain't now way of sucessfully ramming 37.5HP into that post hole auger.................nor would it be a good idea to try.
2250psi and 7.8gpm would be 10.25 gross hydraulic HP. Through an orbit motor it would be 8HP and that is plenty to spin an augur 60rpm.

Yes the landpride dual head is the same pengo I have, the auger and head was 1250 dollars. A bit more than the local farm store auger. Another thing to consider is switching out bits, if you working alone you all most need some way to hold the bits so you can operate the loader to switch them, my auger with rock head is 170 lbs, so you can’t just simply carry it over and slide it up on the shaft and pin it by yourself, least I can’t. the common pto augers are a bit more user friendly when it comes to weight. I do almost all my work alone so I am building a Auger rack, to hold my angers and drive unit when not in use, just something else to think about.

I have the Landpride SA 20 mounted on the loader. Our tractors are similar in size and my SA 20 has the 6 to 15 gpm motor. I run a 12" auger and have been pleased with the unit so far. We have a mix of clay and sandy loam soil. It doesnt spin fast enough to clean out the holes in the sandy loam, but works well in clay. Down pressure is great as is the option to reverse. The slower bit speed also helps with overall control. I use the offset mount for better visibility. Last I run the hydraulics through a WR Long 3rd function kit.

$1400 from a company local to me, requires 8-20 gpm:

Lowe 75 Hex Classic Auger Unit - Skid Steer Attachment Depot

If I had known then what I know now, I would have skipped the 3ph post hole augur for ~$700 and bought this for my super rocky soil. Far easier to mount and dismount, better vision while working and provides down pressure.
