How much rust can under-body spray stop?

these newer autos have a better protection on them. urethane paints, galvanized metal factory, rustproofing in key areas. all these help to keep these newer autos rust free, not like 20 year old cars.

I agree. And as mentioned earlier, most rust starts from the inside and works it's way out. So, unless the installer of protection gets to those areas they aren't going to stop that particular rust. An example is cab corners on a truck.

Look we all understand that if it snows in Missouri, you guys probably put salt on the road. The point is that is only happens once or twice a year for you. Up here in the rust belt we cake our vehicles in salt for 3-4 months of the year. It's brutal and if you haven't lived here, you probably don't really understand what we're talking about. This isn't to discredit your opinions on prevention, but, c'mon. It's not at all the same.

Again, Moss' data is skewed. And your idea that Missourians might only drive on salted roads once or twice a year is ridiculous. When I was working I drove 22 miles one way on either an Interstate Hiway (I35) or a National number Hiway (69). They get salted if snow/sleet is even in the forecast. Bridges all get salted when frost is predicted. This begins in November and runs thru February. Granted it might not happen as often as it does in Michigan. But don't be naïve and think it's only once or twice a year. :)

Moss' data is skewed because the majority of State hiways in Missouri are very, very rural. They only get their snow bladed off if it's 6" or more. They only get salted at stop signs/intersections. So the data is accumulated by simple math. X number of miles of State roads. X number of tons of salt purchased. Has nothing to do with where the vast majority of Missourians drive. :)

Don't get me wrong here,,,,, I am not in any way jealous of how fast you guys can rust out a vehicle. My truck is parked in a heated shop. Never sits outside overnight. I limit my driving on salted roads every chance I get. But I still get on my knees and wash the underside of my truck thoroughly 5 or 6 times during salt season. My 16 year old truck is beginning to rust. Cab corners, rear of front fenders, nothing on rear bedsides yet. I can't wash out my cab corners or the rear of my front fenders. But I can wash out my rear bedsides. Coincidence? :)

Fair enough! In any case, salt blows. I wish winter tires were mandatory instead, and we could only salt in times of ICE, not for every little flake of snow.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, I don't think Colorado salts their roads?? Can't see Moss' chart on this page. They just had a foot of snow in Denver last week. :)

Back when I lived there 73-74, a lot of folks ran studded snow tires in winter so they didn't really need to salt the roads. It did however play havoc with the pavement as the highways had ruts worn into them from all the studs. Not the plastic things they use today but tungsten carbide spikes. When you looked into the closets of most apartments you'd find tire marks on the walls from everyone storing their seasonal tires. At the sign of the first winter storm I'd put my studded snows on and go my way. For a while I commuted daily between Denver and Cheyenne in a little Opel GT and never had a problem. As long as they plowed most of it out of the way, I could go even with 2WD. Still a lot of people, even some natives, drove like idiots in the snow and ice and wound up in the ditches. Usually from driving too fast and or following too close. I guess no one has a corner on the stupidity market.

My son lives in Steamboat Springs, CO, and he tells me they don't salt the roads. I haven not been there in the winter to see it for myself. Jon

My wife's family lives in Denver and Colorado Springs. My very good friend lives in Alamosa. To quote them, "Salt the roads, why the He** would we do that?". :)

I've never heard of car washes recycling their waste water??? Not saying it isn't so. I've just never heard of it. I would not frequent such an establishment.

My stance is Krown or any other commercial undercoating/rustproofing applicator will not apply the product in the necessary places. They can't without some disassembly. And I'm betting they don't do that.

My metaphor concerning the fuel tank was that 95% of vehicle owners have never saw the top of their fuel tank. 90% don't know whether their vehicle fuel tank is plastic or metal. Point being, if these estimates are true, then how much of the remainder of the underside of their vehicle have they never washed? When was the last time you washed your truck's transmission and T-case if 4wd??

If an owner can answer yes to all these things and clarify that they wash all components of their vehicle, their need for coatings is minimal, whether those coatings are "snake oil" or not.

The wand they use looks like a small brake line, they spray ever nook and crannies, inside the frame, on top of the rails, pull tail lights and shoot inside the box. They drill small holes in the rockers, doors, and shoot the oil in.

It took 2 guys over an hour's to spray my truck, it dropped for days after. The frame is still soaked, as is ever other part of it. And it still looks good too.

I can affirm that Krown absolutely soaks your vehicle. I opt for the half spray though. No drilled holes.

Sounds good.

The first 3 places a truck rusts is in front of the front tire or behind the front tire (depending on model), over rear wheels and cab corners. To deal with the fender wells the liners would have to be removed. To deal with the cab corners the interior would have to be peeled back at the rear cab corners and body plugs removed to access the corners or holes drilled (depending on model).

Not knowing of Krown's history, not sure they have been around long enough for testimony about these issues on a treated truck??
