For everyone that missed it earlier. You'll note that the flow charts posted in the thread are for CLASS OF DRIVERS LICENSE.

The CLASS is different than what endorsements you have.

As rswyan and others have pointed out. CDL endorsement is for commercial use. But CDL endorsement can be added to any CLASS of license.

So back to the original question, how much can i tow. Depends on the CLASS of your drivers license.

As others have pointed out, CLASS of license does not depend on commercial use (personal use dump truck, or my posted example of a FL60 for towing large trailers)

So yes you can have a CLASS B non-CDL. I currently have one.

I dont want to get a CDL if I dont need one. Exactly the reasons you mention. But up til now, I was under the impression that I needed one. <snip>
I have not seen a full concise discussion of all the regulations and permutations of what a CDL involves, but a few things I seem to remember -
Driving hours may be restricted, for instance on occasional trips down to Mississippi what is normally a 12 hour trip has become 16.
Insurance might be more expensive
They might be less forgiving of minor violations because you should know better.

nb,

Another thing is Blood Alcohol Level - the limit is considerably lower for CDL holders.

And it doesn't matter whether you're driving a commercial vehicle or not at the time of the infraction.

And you lose your license to drive any vehicle.

Moral of story: If you have a CDL, then choose your mouthwash with care ...

That and if the vehicle has commercial plates you can't even haul alcohol in it even if in a sealed in opened containers.

I thought as long as it's not for commerce and you hold title to said vehicles no CDL is required.
In all states?

Not in Maryland , you need a non commercial license to drive a motorhome over 26000 lbs , or if your truck and trailer weight ratings are over 26K . ( A f 550 with a 15k fifth wheel rv needs a non commercial class a )
