This is the basic concept of 'me and those not me', its root is in fear.
Here's how it works:
My country against your country
My state against your state
My town against your town
My block against your block
My family against your family
Me against my family

Really what we are saying with this line of thinking is that my survival is paramount to all else and I will buffer that survival with what ever group I can. It works perfectly in Rambo movies but the:

"Not me....I'll take my chances on my own.."

I is a basic fear of, first the stranger (xenophobia) 'me and those not me' and then the main fear, the fear of the unknown and the greatest unknown... death. This is what you're expressing and what Grumpy is expressing when he says he will sacrifice those closest to him for his own survival.

The trouble with fear is that it is not the best solution for long term survival. We walk down a path in the woods and step on a snake and jump back without thinking. This is instinct and the thought pattern in the brain short circuits logic and reason (rear integrative cortex) and goes right to the amygdala (the fear center in the brain). When the fear center is active reason goes out the window, it's what happened when you panicked on a test in school and your mind went 'blank'. So it's great for jumping back when you step on a snake but lousy when you want to employ reason. We already know these things about the mind so again when people start talking about 'me against the world' we know automatically they are afraid and in that fear they will function without real reason.

So now you're out in the woods, maybe you're good at it and you last for years on your own. No friends, companions and no one to love and have love returned from. What is life worth? Anthropologists, analysts and sociologists will have a field day with that!

You need to go back and read the posts again ! And tell me the post # where "I" said any such thing !I never said "I" would do any such thing as sacrifice my wife for my own survival , I think all you want is to argue with someone and personally "I" think your being immature ! :hissyfit:

BOBs are emergency items, everyone should have one with essential survival ingredients. They are not meant to keep you alive indefinitely but they could help you get out of an area like NOLA that's in trouble. A BOB could help you walk away from an area to a safe place. It's not perfect but it could increase your chances of survival.

and a BOB is a BIB as well.

if you can't bug out.. you may have to bug in.

same items apply.

having a pack like that helps in those first critical 72 hours that you may either need to stay put or be on the move.. and need to do it fast.

having a lil water and source of energy and some basic supplies may be that thin thread between almost made it, and just barely made it.

Who is "you"? What you are doing here is voicing your own views on how you would act. First you express your views on the belief that your neighbors will be your enemies then you tell us "you would be trading ANYTHING IN YOUR POSESSION TO STAY FED". Again, you're the one who made these statements. How do you know what others will do? You're telling us how you would act. You're telling us how your fears will be played out.

How do you know that you will be prepared for every situation? None of us knows that, so there will be a point when each of us is the "unprepared". That goes for you too. Again, you're defining how you will act when the chips are down.

So my "issues" are that there is a point when I will draw the line, when I will look at life and believe that there is more to human evolution than my individual survival, my speck of dust in the universe, and I will accept death. I've seen death before, held dying people in my arms and if it is at my door then so be it but my belief is that there is more to spiritual evolution than material life. In short that there is a God and at some fragile point in my existence I will be accountable for my actions but even if I am not I still believe that my physical life is only worth so much.

You are constantly angry and even call yourself "Grumpy" but you think others have "issues". Let me tell you what anger is, it is unfulfilled expectations. We build a model of reality and when that reality is challenged we become afraid. So anger is really another form of fear and if you're angry here then you're angry with the people close to you, we don't fragment our actions. So what you are doing is showing us that you are afraid and when we are afraid we make poor decisions and our ability to be "self sufficient" is greatly diminished.... "Honestly".
