How To Check If Differential Lock Work? BX 2200

I would suggest that if the wheels are spinning and your not moving, you stop the wheels from spinning before engaging the differential lock. This applies pretty much across the board, even if your Accipiter and "just" driving a Case 580B or whatever! Rat

The way the dealer showed me was to let off the hydro pedal to stop the wheel spin, put pressure (not a lot), on the lock pedal, and hold pressure until you feel it "drop in" and become engaged. Once engaged, the the tractor really has a different feel. Sort of trying to turn the tractor while the four wheel drive is engaged.

I do not "feel" anything when I push on the pedal /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif, snow coming tonight so will try it again.

Once engaged, the the tractor really has a different feel.....

I thought the differential stayed on only as long as you have your foot on the pedal /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Tom,

Yes it is suppose to disengage when you let go of the pedal. In my case though I sometimes have to hit one of the brakes, not both of them but one of them. So I have to reach down and take the even brake loc off, hit one brake and it will come out. I usually can tell if mine is locked in just by the height of the pedal. This winter I goofed mine up and it doesn't work like it use to as far as coming back out on it's own.

The dif lock on my BX2200 works the way hfd376 describes. I push lightly on the foot pedal until you feel resistance; keep slight pressure on the pedal until you feel it pop in (travels another inch or so when it pops in). When it is engaged, both rear wheels turn at the same rate until you release the pedal.

NY Yankees,

It will stay engaged as long as there is strain on the lock, or your foot is on the pedal. That is, it may stay engaged even if you do remove your foot, so long as the wheels want to turn at different speeds, either spinning or in a turn.

Sorry Yankees Fan, I was'nt as clear as I should have been. (A good thing i don't write tech manuals!) Once you let off the hydro pedal, apply slight pressure to the diff lock lever. Hold pressure on lock lever and press the hydro pedal. Once the hydro starts to turn the wheels, within a revolution or two, you should feel the lock lever drop and engage. If it does not, I would assume that it is not working properly.

Here is a simple way to test the diff lock, especially if you are in snow. Place your loader or bumper against something solid(bank, rock, ect) while in 2wd. Press on the HST. You should note one rear tire turning. Now, while one tire is slowly spinning, depress the diff lock. You should note both tires turning now. Stop, now though, before you dig thru the snow and make a pot hole in your yard.

When you are driving, a locked rear diff will tend to push the tractor straight, even while turning. You'll occasionally here 4x4 truck and Jeeps tires chirp when they turn into a taight parking space. The have a posi or locker, and it wants to push the vehicle straight, as both rear tires are locked together and want to move at the same speed(in a turn, the "differential" allows the outer tire to spin at a different rate than the inside tire. locking the diff defeats this).

On my older B8200, you can feel the diff lock engage. There is a noticable feel on the pedal when it engages.

I used my differential lock alot this winter while pushing snow.
The complaint I have is how hard it is to engage.
It will not engage at standstill. It is hard to engage while moving. I have to apply pressure to the lock and drive the tractor waiting for it to engage. Seems I have to engage far in advance to have it ready for use. Has anyone come up with a trick to get it to engage better. My driveway is on a hill, I was wondering if this is preloading the transmission making it harder to enage. Sometimes I drive back and forth waiting for it to engage. It's a pain.

It won't engage unless some things in the tranny are lined up. Usually it's easier once one of the wheels is spinning slowly and the other isn't. Don't apply too much pressure! It doesn't help anything and could in fact bend the yoke that sets it. There is another post somewhere about someone doing just that and having an expensive repair. Just make sure that when you want to apply it not to be spinning to fast and I think you'll be just fine. I wait until I lose traction, then slow down, press on the lever and it slides right in.
