How to find septic lines?

My $.02,

My dad was plumber, used dowsing to find underground pipes, never failed.
I was a science teacher for 34 years, don't believe in much mystical stuff.
However, when I was about 14, he had to find the leach field at a local school.
We flushed a whole bunch of toilets, got water flowing in the field and he dowsed out the lines with amazing accuracy. Brass pipe handles, bent brazing rods held horizontally. Cross a pipe line and the rods would cross.

He taught me how to dowse lines where there was flowing water. I don't understand how or why, but it does work for me. I've done it many times to locate water lines and septic lines, can't do power lines.

Don't understand it, can't explain it, confuses the heck out of me, but it's hard to argue with success.

Saw a sign on a septic truck years ago, that read something like this. Guaranteed to find your septic, or double your crap back. I wonder what they used.

I never thought there was anything mystic about it. I thought tree roots naturally tend to seek out water and it was a matter of feeling the wood react to the presence of water under the ground.

By now, the original poster has probably dug up his entire yard anyway.

The wires work for me, I do it all the time. It's been awhile, but I believe the scientific reason has to do with an object (pipe) passing thru a magnetic field (the earths field) creates it's own magnetic field around that object. For best results you need to approach the pipe at a perpendicular. I believe a physics teacher once explained it, so if I get a chance I might look thru my old physic books.

My dad has had water located by the peach limb method, I've never tried the limb method myself.

[ I work for a civil engineering company and we paid a guy to locate water lines for us in a prison for us to survey it. It was cast iron and the locators only go a short way and get stopped by the joints.

I not only work for a civil engineering company that does mostly water and sewer work but I am one of the Engineers. The company also has a divinig rod sold comercially through USA Bluebook. I can not explain how exactly it works but it does work. However, if several lines cross or are in close proximaty it makes it very difficult.
