How to follow water pipe?

Chilly807,

There are some restrictions. No wearing of copper or other metal bracelets that cure all ailments, and must have no metal in your teeth as this might disturb the field surrounding the object of your search.

How about trying a compass and see if crossing a PVC line will make it change direction.

One has to ask them-self, why a small sliver of metal can align itself with the earths magnetic field, and why someone needs two long wires for an indicator.

That was very interesting, a simple impartial look at the subject.

Even the guy that missed the telephone line hit a drain line in the middle of a field.

I like the disruption in the magnetic field theory. electromagnetism is the greatest force in the universe and still not all that well understood, part of the reason for CERN.

It's hard to imagine particles that can pass through what we consider a solid object and never hit anything.:)

Wonder if that is true?:)

Are you sure these magnetic lines of force go through metal objects, or just rerouted around them to give us what is called a magnetic disturbance. This is what a magnetometer looks for. Before they put you in an MRI. they ask one to remove all metal objects, and is the force imposed by the magnets, strong enough to pull metal from your body? Your body must change that field somehow in order to read a change of tissue/bone density.

Someone ask me if those copper, or other special metal bracelets work, and I said sure, they make you want to keep asking, do these things work.

No, I don't believe the bracelets do anything at all, but they say that they cure all ailments, Sure, would you trust your body health to a bracelet.

So yesterday I had to have a locate on my property. I am out in the sticks, hillbilly land.

So the locate guy comes up and I notice in the back of his truck copper wires bent over in an L shape. I make a crack about if I didn't know better I would think he was going to divine. He looked at me incredulously, said he is paid very very well by the locate company because he can. He does a lot of old construction locate work.

Well, Well.... I can't resist. I am missing a water line and was going to ask him as a side gig to locate it. So money exchanged hands, he used his finder to find the water mains from the city, and then pulled out the copper. Walked around a bit and said the pipe is here.... I saw the wires move but not like what I expected.

So he then grabs his toner and meter and walks the same area. Low and behold he is pretty reasonably on. Depth was 18" on a plastic pipe with electrical running next to it. (old well head line).

Pretty cool.

Did you happen to video this remarkable feat? How much did he have to walk to find it. I wonder if you told him there were three pipes out there would he have found anything.

I could have kicked myself for not taping it. Didn't feel comfortable as the I had sort of questioned the guys voracity anyway.....

Ok, I went divining, again, after over 40+ years, My Dad was a big believer in the forked peach tree limb for finding water. I never had any luck with it at all, and never as a child saw him have any luck with it, tho he claimed he did. So today, went outside to locate my utilities. (which by the way I know exactly where they are as I have had them located a couple of times) I used the tried and true, steel suspended ceiling tile hanger wires, 18 inches long, with 6 inches of handle, held out in front, of you, and walk slowly. I am that 1 guy in 10 that cannot do this. the slightest movement can make the wires cross or uncross, but walking at right angles to the known position of the electric and phone lines gave no indication for me. I guess I wasn't holding my mouth right.:) No I did not get a video of this, I didn't want to look like a fool. I think I will wait another 40 or so years before I try it again.:D YMMV

We had to drill a 2nd well in '87 so a guy shows up with the 2 copper wires to locate a site. Sure enough, the wires begin to spin - "drill here", he said, so the driller set the drill bit on the spot and had at it. 285 feet later I had a quart/minute. I guess it worked? Not being satisfied (some people are just hard to please) I asked the well driller what he would do. Without any inspection he moved his rig to another part of the property and backed it up utill he got it stuck in soft soil. "Looks like a good place", he said and began again. At 65 feet he hit 6 gal/min and at 120' another 19. WOW - 25 gpm. he hit the fire department.
